Brian, for most folks this can be kind of hard on the head. I can't run much anymore, can't do an Oly anymore, am slow, etc., due to health issues but don't want to give up the thrill of the start, camaraderie, etc.
I've learned to accept what I can do on that day, base my goals on that, and measure my performance based on that. If somebody  asks your time sometimes it still sucks a bit to tell them but ya gotta measure yourself by what you can do, not what you wish you could do. I still struggle with that one a bit.

regardless, good luck, have fun, don't make your itis any worse, and rock that swim. Enjoy it.

DanielG - 2010-05-13 10:02 AM Write the RD of the race and explain. The absolute worst they can say is no changes, no refunds. Every now and again they'll let you shift to the next year or do another one of their races of the same distance. Just tell them what happened. I wouldn't even start with that kind of medical issue going on.

I would add to that by "sweetening the pot"  ask the RD for a deferral AND offer to volunteer for the whole event at the same time.  Skip the swim.  How bad will it hurt when someone kicks you in the knee?

ToeKnail - 2010-05-13 3:47 PM Any chance you you change your registration over to a relay? (Assuming you have a friend or 2 prepared to do the bike and run)

I was thinking the same thing. This is what I'd try to do.

Well in March I told my wife I wasn't doing IMSG because of recurring injuries and lack of training.  The next week, I decided to give it a try.   I figured that its better to try than to just dns.  When the race came around I was expecting the injury to act up but it never did; the lack of training got me though and I dnf'ed.

Weeks going up to it, I knew that I may dnf, but then as the race came up I really pushed that out of my head and really didn't think I couldn't finish.  Trust me dnf'ing an IM is a pretty crappy feeling...

I think our situations are different though and I would probably try at least the swim portion.

BTW: just to make your life and decision making more difficult, I just read today in the latest email that the OLY is sold out and there is waiting list. So, your chances of getting a deferral are much higher, especially if you offer to volunteer and especially if you write the RD today vs. next week. I would honestly go that route if it were me. I just couldnt go into a race knowing that I was planning on not finishing or walking the run. For what? A finisher's medal? You really want to remember that race?

That just ain't racing to me...but I understand your quandry. It sucks no matter what, but like I said...sometimes you just have to accept it and fight another day.

Thanks everyone!  It is comforting to know I'm not alone and hear how you have handeled this situation in the past.

I e-mailed the RD and asked for a derferral in exchange for volunteering, we'll see what he says, never hurts to ask.  He says ok, cool I still get to be involved and have a race next year paid for.  If he can't, well, then I get a OWS in and enjoy the rest of the race as a spectator, something I've never done.

Thanks Again...

-Brian
