Hmmmm... I can't really think of anything that makes me break out in a cold sweat.... other than when my college son calls.

He VERY rarely calls me, so when he does I'm always petrified for a few moments that he's going to tell me he's been in a car accident or some other awful thing has happened.  My whole body stiffens up as I'm thinking, "what's wrong, what's wrong, what's wrong?!?"

I'm always SO relieved when he just tells me he's coming home for the weekend or something.

If I think about it for any length of time it frightens me so much it makes me cry.

Interesting.  This is what I expect when my time comes.  And I am ok with that.

Lots of stufff...

Biggest is flying...actually it's falling to my death in a plane I can't get out of! I have nightmares about this often hardley ever fly now.

Sharks...though I'm realizing that this is mostly a great white fear (thanks Peter Benchley!) I was able to keep this fear mostly at bay until a triathlete was killed a few years ago by a white. Now I'm really having a hard time doing ocean swims.

For all you So Cal residents...the Nightstalker. He was that serial killer that was running rampant in 1985 or 86. I was so scared at the time (age 11ish) that I couldn't sleep in my room for over a year. I don't think about it much, but the other night there was a blurb on the news about it having been 25 years, and I saw his picture for a few seconds...started to panic, then couldn't fall asleep. Once I did, I had nightmares that night.

Spiders aren't a biggy, but tarantulas are horrible. I blame the Brady Bunch Hawaii episode.

Cancer. I'm convinced that every ache or pain I have is some tumor growing that is going to kill me! I think it is because my dad got cancer young, but who knows.

Big ferris wheels. Seriously, almost had a panic attack on that stupid California Adventure ferris wheel. I have issues with heights, and something about stopping and swinging at a height is SO not cool!

I get that way when someone from my kids' school calls. I think they should be required to say up front "You child is not hurt or in the hospital" before they say "This is Mrs. So-and-so from so-and-so Elementary School." My heart always drops until I hear what the call is about.

To me, after being with family this whole time, it actually might be peaceful for once.

Small Rodents and things that fly, especially moths.

I have thick curly hair and if a moth gets stuck in there I completely freak out.

Also losing the people I love.  Been there done that and don't want it to happen again

D.K. - 2010-05-18 4:50 AM I am afraid of a lot of things, but have faced and dealt with them when I have no other way around it.  Ranging from small things like bugs and height to public speaking to making major life decisions.
I found every time I face and go through them the next time I would be a little less afraid.  Although I am still very afraid of bugs.

Unfortunately, the only thing I'm truly afraid of is geckoes. and no amount of dealing with them--which is ALL THE TIME, EVERYWHERE--makes it any better.

However, surprisingly and thankfully, it isn't any worse either.

Heights, which is so strange for a pilot.  I have flown all kinds of aircraft, even ultra lights (a lawnmower with no doors).

I was in an elevator in Niagara Falls that was half way up the building, and suddenly had glass walls.  I freaked out and dropped to my knees while I crawled to the middle of the elevator.  All the people moved away from me like I was contagious or something.

At another time, at the Grand Canyon, wifey touched my on the shoulder while I was close to the
edge.  I practically jumped over I was so scared.

I am afraid of heights, but only when I'm on the top of something REALLY tall and look up.  I can stand at the edge of a sky scraper and look down...no problem.  I can climb a cliff and look up and down...no problem until I get to the very top and look up.  I think it has something to do with a lack of objects to give me a visual perspective.  Either that or I'm just a freak. Smile

Oh, and I am also not a big fan of rockets and mortars, unless they are going the other way.

I'm scared of spiders and, even worse, CRICKETS. Grasshoppers are creepy too, but not as bad as crickets. I also have a somewhat irrational fear of being attacked/kidnapped/raped while I am running alone. I miss out on some nice scenery because I stick to high-traffic areas due to this fear. Oh well, better safe than sorry!
