I just experienced my first case of achilles tendinitis. My wife, being the wonderful person that she is, was at the library today and happened to notice this brand new book, Running Injuries, and brought it home for me.

It was just published (2010), so it's up to date. Among his many suggestions for avoiding and recovering from injuries, is to avoid stretching. This pretty much completely contradicts everything I've read the last 10 days (on this site as well as many others) regarding achilles tendinitis.

I'm going to continue stretching. I was just wondering what other peoples' thoughts were regarding this topic, or this book.

Thanks.

Haven't read the book, but I think too many people stretch "cold" instead of warming up with a brisk walk/easy jog and THEN stretching. Just stretching I would think would cause injuries (let the lashings begin!)

That's one of the things I've read the last couple weeks and that I've started doing - warm up a couple minutes, then stretch, then run.

But, Galloway isn't even promoting that. He pretty much discourages any stretching.

that is funny because i just posted a question on the injury forum because I feel like my stretching is irritating my IT band issue right now!

Now, I will say that I had a bad bout with achilles as well and was told (and read) that stretching can be bad for that.

I found the best thing for ach. ten. was deep tissue massage.  I think you want to elongate the tight calf muscles without stretching the tendon.  That is why most calf stretches inflame tendinitius.  P&M Myofascial Release Therapy and Active Release Therapy both work for me.  I now do "foam rolling" to stretch muscles and really work out muscle tightness.

He doesnt believe in stretching but if someone stretches and has good results he doesnt tell them to stop. Also, you have to be very careful stretching pulled muscles, areas with tendonitis, etc. It can definitely aggravate the problem if you arent careful.

I stretch all the time. When I neglected to stretch regularly is when I've had injuries. My stretching is always done after running, never before.

There are other highly regarded running coacheswho recommend stretching. Bobby Magee is one that comes to mind. The stretches he recommends are dynamic rather than static. I think Scout posted a link for stretching a few times. A search here would find it.
