Subject: Water Snakes - How far from shore?
I saw the thread about the Triathlete who got bit by an alligator in Florida.  It got me to thinking about my own lake and what might be in it.

I live in NC and we have Water Moccasins and Copperheads.

I admit I often think about snakes when I am swimming, but don't let it get to me.  I "assume" that snakes only stay near the shoreline and so long as I am far enough away from shore, I should not have to worry.

Has anyone ever encountered a snake while OWS?  Is it safe to assume they do not go out into the lake, but rather stay near the shore?

I get the feeling I'm going to be sorry I asked.

Move North

I've heard that Water Moccasins gladly swim straight across a lake (but we don't have them here in Central Illinois, so I have no first-hand accounts).

Snapping turtles would only be a problem if you step on their head (so don't put your feet down)

I've spent a lot of time in lakes, both swimming and water skiing. I've seen lot's of snakes in the middle of large lakes. I don't know what kind they were, but since they weren't dead I know they were not the good kind.

Cord... you can post in my threads any time.  Even if it's just to pad your post count.

Mike - I happen to be from up north!  Hometown is northeasten Ohio.  But it's been so long I can't recall what kind of snakes live there.  I need to move back up to Alaska where the only snakes that bite are snow snakes.

And ya'll made me feel SO much better telling me snakes go out in the middle.  I should have just gone on believing they stay near the shore.

They don't want anything to do with a big splashy mess...  Do be more aware at dusk and dawn though

Water snakes?  That's not the question to ask... there are "other things" to question.

Generally, the snakes who swim out far from shore are nothing to worry about.

They're usually eaten by the gators.

Didn't help, did I?

I have never heard of anyone being bitten by a snake in the water. If ya see it while swimming leave it alone.  If ya see it when ashore shoot it.

Moccasins typically swim in rivers with some current.  Copperheads will be around limbs, tree stumps, mud holes and basking around water and sun, well hidden.  Worry about the Moccasins but you don't really need to worry much about the AKA "Cottonmouth".  You can see them coming with their easy to spok s body movement in the water, and top speed, almost as fast as you.  Lake Jordan, they are there but near shore and coves, stumps, etc, away from where folks swim.  Cumberland County, near in the rivers....but Maria, if you get bitten, when you do Ironman, what a nice tattoo it would make!

Ok, I feel kind of obligated to reply on this one.  I am an environmental scientist/wildlife biologist and did my master's research focusing on herpetology and I'm from Texas... I know a couple things about snakes, including water moccasins/cottonmouths (they are the same species of snake).  Ok in general semi aqautic snakes like water moccasins and water snakes (non-venomous) prefer some place with cover so they can ambush their prey (not you), so most of the time they are near the banks.  However that does not mean they don't decide on a whim that they want to go to the other side of the water body or to the snag out in the middle.  But, if you do encounter one in the middle of the water they are VERY reluctant to bite.  In the open water they have plenty of avenues for escape and really only strike when they are cornered or screwed with where they have few other options.  Copperheads on the other hand, like all snakes can swim, but rarely do. I would be VERY surprised to even hear of a copperhead in the middle of a large water body.  Honestly the only fauna I am every concerned with during open water swims (fresh or saltwater) are jellyfish.  When they are schooling swimming is ZERO fun.  While doing my grad research I would often be out at night in knee deep water with several water moccasins near by looking for the same frogs I was and I never had an incident.  I encounter them on a weekly basis with my current job and have never had an incident, just give them respect and no worries. Hope I helped

Copperheads, don't sweat them. They're more land based and you basically have to one off before it'll bite.
(edit) the word was cut off. you basically have to really annoy one before it'll bite.

Cottonmouths, well if it's mating season and you're in a river or anywhere with a current... Have you ever noticed that people who grew up in the South don't tend to go into open water at all? It's the Yankees that have no problem just jumping into a lake or large river. Cottonmouths will come get you if they get a mind to do so. They've got PMS for life.

Ha ha, Pector.  Very funny!

Scooby - The only gators I have to worry about around here are the ones that people turn loose as pets!

Now Harold... you know how (ahem"fast" I can swim and it ain't pretty!  But I'm good at being a "big splashy mess" as Andy mentioned.

Daniel - I'll keep that in mind when I go tubing this weekend!

tbcotten - Yes, it helps to get an experts point of view.  Thank you!  I'm ok with it.  I just started with Triathlon last fall, so I'm just now getting into OWS.  My lake (and bike route) are in a very desolate wooded area on the Fort Bragg military reservation and there are LOTS of snakes.  I took pics of three different snakes on a recent bike ride (all 3, same ride).  I've not identified these snakes, but they all look non-venemous.  And this is very near my swimming hole!

After having been on and around Bragg for 9 years or so, I'd have to say those look like two black racers and an Eastern corn snake or brown water snake. I say that with absolutely no certainty at all.

Thank you for your input, I feel much better - I have a fear of snakes as well and I'm not even in a part of the country (I think) that would be a real issue for them.

So, um, (cough, cough).........what about snapping turtles?  Same deal?

First two are definitely non poisonous - look at the heads - they are not diamond shaped.  The only poisonous snake with a non diamond shaped head is a Coral Snake, but they are easy to recognize from the brightly colored bands on their body - Red / Yellow / Black...

The last pic looks like it has a diamond shaped head, if so it would be your standard cotton-mouth-water-moccasin type snake...  If not then it is non poisonous as well...

The snakes aren't out there to get YOU.  They mostly want to be left alone.  You mind your own business and they'll mind theirs for the most part.  some one wrote about cotton mouths gettin' after you.  yeah, they will if the mood strikes.  They're ornery little cusses with bad dispositions.  But the rest will swim the other way if they get the slightest hint you are around.  Think about the snakes on the trail you took pictures of.  any of them seek you out or did they run (slither) the opposite direction as soon as they knew you were around?

I have a lake not 5 miles from my house that I won't set foot in near shore for the same reason.  Lake Houston is known for being snake infested.  I find snakes in my backyard about 4 times a year in the summer.  I will go in some other lakes around here, just not Lake Houston.  Rather take my chances with the sharks in the ocean.

Haven't swam it, but plan to soon.  Got the Sylvan Beach tri coming up that I have to get ready for.  Never heard a bad word about it.  I'll pretty much swim any lake around here except Lake Houston.  It's a shame.  The most convenient lake for me and I won't swim it.
