Pre-race routine:

Olive Garden the night before, lots of hydration starting Wednesday. Bowl of cocoa puffs at the hotel. Lots of trips to the port o johns. Gel 45 minutes out, light active stretching.
Event warmup:

More active stretching.
Swim
  • 08m 48s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was pretty chaotic as expected. I had not done an open water swim in years, all my plans for stroke, breathing, etc went out the door once we bunched up, the water was so cold I was just looking buoy to buoy. Some guy was in a panic and pushed himself up using me as a base, lifeguard training kicked in and i dove down and found a hole between some people to surface out of. Was not able to find a groove so I side stroked most of the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Wetsuit or faster run into the water to get away from the pack.
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

No real plan or organization, I was treating this race as a training day and as my immersion back into the sport.
What would you do differently?:

Practice and plan out my transition.
Bike
  • 1h 02m 21s
  • 17.6 miles
  • 16.94 mile/hr
Comments:

Kept it steady and maintained.
What would you do differently?:

Find some hills and do repeats.
Transition 2
  • 01m 31s
Comments:

No socks, Zoots, slip in,helmet off, hat on, number belt on, and go.
What would you do differently?:

Practice gettins feet out of shoes before dismount point.
Run
  • 29m 22s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

Went too slow. Legs did not loosen up until 1 mile in.
What would you do differently?:

Actually do a few brick workouts.
Post race
Warm down:

Stretch, eat.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of prep time.

Thanks, you did great, Im trying to get my wife to do a Tri, but the excuse monster is rearing its ugly head, she can do the run and bike now. She would not be last, maybe second or third to last. I think it would be motivating for her.

Maybe a Pool tri would be good for your wife. Would make the swim a little easier. It's crazy fun.

I need to get her in a pool and do an evaluation, she claims she is a dog paddler only.
