Subject: Memorial Day OWS

This was tossed around in the other OWS thread, but I thought we better get a more directed discussion going.

I looked at my schedule and the only day I can do an OWS is on Memorial Day itself.  It will surely be a busy day at the lakes, so I would prefer a morning swim.  9:00 should be early enough.

I'm interested in Christmas lake, but am open to suggestions.

I had talked about a mock tri, but I don't have the energy to really set it up.  But if you are new to triathlons, and want help with the OWS but also with transitions, I am HAPPY to stay and chat.  I can even watch your stuff if you want to go for a short (10-15 min) ride after the swim to get the feel of that transition.

Let me know!

I'd recommend getting out there a little earlier, especially on a holiday.

I've only swam out there twice, but there are folks in my masters group that swim that lake a couple times a week.  They generally try to be out of the water by 8:00 or so to avoid the boat traffic (thus the reason I've only made it out there to swim twice).

Okay, thanks.  Maybe best to use a lake with less boats for this first one.  Calhoun is convenient.  Nokomis, etc.

If you can stand the early wakeup Christmas is worth it.  The water quality is better than the city lakes and you don't have to worry about staying within the confines of a swim area.

I guess I'll see who is interested and go from there.  I don't mind getting up early, but was more worried about the cold air

Interested but out of town until 4pm on Memorial Day. Anytime after that I could/would be interested in doing some OWS. I've never done any OWS and would like to get some practice but don't really want to do it alone.

Also, has anyone ever done swimming in Silver Lake? It's very close to the house and would like to swim it if possible.

Hi,

I spent a lot of high school summer time swimming / tubing around that public access "alley" at christmas lake. Good memories.

Too much of a hike from st cloud though.

Do you mean Silver Lake up near New Brighton?  I've only been there once, recreationally, and don't recall how it would be to swim there for "real."  But you should check it out sometime around the time you'd be able to swim.  Do they allow boats?  is there a clear swimming area without a bunch of weeds and stuff?  I would be game for meeting on a weekday evening.  I work in St. Paul so it's easy enough for me to head that way.  Let me know.

That could work.  I am not sure how lunch and 7:15 AM are part of the same concept, but if that works for ya I'd be up for it.

I will be at our cabin near Brainerd this weekend so offering our quiet lake for anyone up there.  Great spot for rides or runs too with the Paul Bunyan Trail nearby.

In the west 'burbs Shady Oak Lake might be a good option this weekend as the beach (and nosy lifeguards) isn't officially open until June 11 and I believe it is a non-motorized (or maybe < 25 hp) lake, so safe from speedboats.

Sounds nice, thanks   If only it were a bit closer...

I wondered about Shady Oak.  I assumed it would be a problem trying to swim there when it's closed.  Can you still get onto the beach?

Good point...if the parking lot gate and beach fence are both locked, it could be tough to get to the water right at the beach.  However, there are other access points to the lake, and I bet a resourceful triathlete could find a way!  We used to run over lunch from work to the trail near the NW corner of the lake, take off our running shoes and go for a quick out and back swim.

Monday at Christmas Lake:

  1. who will, for sure, be there?
  2. who might be there?
  3. does anyone know where to park and where to meet?  I've never been there...
  4. meet around 7?
  5. In the water at 7:15?

Anything else?

1) I'm down for meeting for this ows, just to meet some other BTer's in person if nothing else:-)
2) I'll be there for sure if at least 1 other person will be there;-)
3) no idea, I've never been there either...
4) meeting @ 7's good for me
5) in the water @7:15 sounds good too...

Any plan other than cruising across or around the lake or anything (swim for a length of time/practice swim drafting/anything like that)?

Was anyone going to do a bike or a run afterward? I'm scheduled for a 45min swim / 1hour bike brick that day so just checking because I'd bring my bike with if so (oh, and not fast probably cause I'll be doing a 1/2 marathon on Sunday)... Don't know the roads for biking out that way though...

jarheadjred:  I am planning abour 45 minutes too, so that works.  Depending on where we can swim (across the lake, or???) I would probably say just swim steady for the duration and maybe meet up at a few points to make sure no one drowns.  It's likely you're faster than me... just based on the fact that most are.

I have a big weekend ahead of me for training, so the swim is all I can manage that day.  4 hour bike tomorrow and 10-mile run Sunday - woo-hoo.

Sorry to be all wishy washy, but I wanted to put out the idea of swimming at Long Lake Park Reserve where the New Bri Tri will be, instead of Christmas Lake.  At least I know where it is...   I don't want to disappoint anyone, although I think I was only one who was really keen on trying Christmas.

I will be wherever for sure.
It may be me or my wife and I.
I am open to about anywhere we decide as long as I know where in advance
Pretty open to meeting people and just getting the the water/wetsuit.

Getting up early for a group ride in the morning, 60 miles tomorrow, coming off 65 total yesterday.  Looking forward to the amazing weather this weekend.

So are we going to shoot for Long Lake around 7AM shooting to be in the water around 7:15?  From what i remember of the lake last year at New Bri, you swim almost all the way across to the other side and back for 1/2 a mile, so if someone wanted they could stop at 1/4 and rest etc.

Okay, let's do it.  Giant Tortoise helped us with Christmas Lake directions on my other thread, but we can save them for the next time

See you guys at Long Lake.  I drive a black Toyota Rav4.  I'll be the chick standing on the beach around 7:00 in the full Xterra suit.  I should be easy to find.

See you in the morning,

Emily
