Age Group Rank = 1/34
Pre-race routine:

Woke up @ 5, packed, checked out of the hotel. Got to the race site around 6. Had a banana, some fig bars, and a bottle of water on the way. Had plenty of time to set up transition, hit the porta potty, get marked, and chat it up a bit.
Event warmup:

Swam a couple hundred yards, then had an unexpected 20 minute wait after the oly distance folks took off- kinda negated the warmup.
Swim
  • 15m 40s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 55s / 100 yards
Comments:

Amazingly calm at the start of this swim- no nerves at all. Wind created quite an interesting swim. Started right in the middle of the pack. We had a decent size wave with all competitors over 30 starting at the same time. Handled the physical contact MUCH better than my last OWS tri- no panicking today even with two straight breaths of longview lake early on.

I swam very hard throughout and was crushed when I saw my swim time. Only now that I have seen the complete results do I feel better about it. Last time I swam in this lake I finished in the bottom third, today I was top ten and fastest in my AG by almost a minute. The water was rough, but I think it HAD to also be a bit long as i was expecting something in the 1:40/100 range.
Transition 1
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

1st transition I have ever done with having to strip my wetsuit. Fastest T1 I have ever had by almost a minute.
Bike
  • 39m 50s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 18.68 mile/hr
Comments:

Really like this bike course. It was a good mix of flats and hills. Wind was brutal through a few miles on the backstretch. Not my best effort on the bike, but was satisfied considering the conditions. Dropped my chain going up a hill about mile 4- cost me about 20-30 seconds. Also had a couple of guys walking out of the transition area chatting about the swim blocking the whole road- rude.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have gone a bit harder on the bike, but I haven't done any fast rides during my HIM training and didn't know for sure how my legs would handle me trying to push it.
Transition 2
  • 01m 17s
Comments:

Decent T2. Remembered to take off my helmet this time
Run
  • 22m 17s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 11s  min/mile
Comments:

Not quite the run I was looking for, but not too bad either. Really expected to be able to run this around 21, but just didn't have it in me today.
Post race
Warm down:

Jogged around yelling at my buddies still on the course.

Event comments:

First multisport podium- nice! Most of the big competition was in the olympic race today, but I'll take the win any way I can get it. Really went into this race with no expectations other than to get a little swim confidence and knock the rust off before IM KS in two weeks. I knew I had suffered some speed loss in the last 20 weeks of HIM training so I tried not to think about times too much.

Very well run race. Had a great time and will be back next year for sure.
