Subject: Lake CDA water temp 5/22/2010

My two training buddies and I were out riding the IMCDA bike course Saturday and I took a water temp-- 45 degrees. We've had an unusually cold spring. Last night set a record low for Spokane--32 degrees.

Just throwing this out as an FYI, not trying to worry anybody. I don't know if this is normal or not for that date. This is just the first year I've cared enough to measure.

Interestingly, the reading was lower than the the USGS site. I think they take their reading at the lake outlet.

I was out on the dock near the swim finish.

I'll post another reading in a couple weeks.

Wow- I definitely plan on having a longer T1 because I will need to hit the hot tub to unthaw my hands if it's below 50 degrees on race day.  Seriously- how in the world can you even change or ride a bike with frozen hands???

I'm pretty sure it will warm at least into the 50's, but I think it might be below average on raceday. The IMCDA website says average raceday temp is around 67, but unfortunately I'm skeptical that it will get that warm in a month. I'll probably ride the course the weekend of June 19th and will take another reading and post the results.

I'm not doing the race.

I do this race in NH in early June and water temps can go up 10 degrees in a week depending on the weather. I've done the race when it's been 55 and when it's been 65 depending on weather week or two before the race is held.

I've definitely heard recommendations for a neoprene cap at those temps.  Even for earplugs.  Is there a temp at which neoprene booties are allowed/recommended?

65 or below booties are legal--per the IMCDA website. I've got a pair on order--I went with the Blue Seventy swim socks.

I definitely plan on wearing ear plugs.  Not sure yet about the booties.  Instead of a neoprene cap I was thinking about doubling up and wearing 2 caps- any thoughts on how well that will work?

Neoprene cap works much better than doubling up on caps.

I'd suggest getting a cap now and seeing if you need it when you get there. Better than having to scramble to find one if when you get to the race site.

Agreed ...but it takes getting used to as the covering of your ears can be surprisingly annoying.

If you get to CdA a couple days early then you might want to do the Gatorade swim in the morning.  This gives you some time to expirament with what might work/not work.

I might look into getting a pair of those booties ... just in case.  Another thing to consider is arm warmers for the first 30 minutes or so on the bike. Cold body core temp + wind on wet clothes can be pretty tough going for the beginnings of a long ride then run.

I've heard that it takes some getting used to the chin strap that the neoprene swim caps have.  I can see where that would definitely feel different and maybe annoying at first.

I think I'm more worried about my hands being so cold coming out of the water where I cannot function in T1.  Will probably need help grabbing the stuff from my T1 bag or else I'll be stuck in the there for awhile.

I will definitely wear arm warmers for the bike!

I've done lake swims in February and worn 2-3 swim caps and did fine as far as the cold water is concerned.  I did B2B last year and it was cold exiting the swim.  I had put tube socks with the toes cut off in my T1 bag to use as "arm warmers."  That way I could just throw them away as soon as I didn't need them anymore.  Just some thoughts...

USGS has 52.7 F at the lake outlet, 9 feet below the surface.

It is still too early for this panic. Last time it was super cold was 2008 and it shot up several degrees in just 2 or 3 days. There is not a ton of water coming in from run off anymore, so some warm days will dramatically warm it.

I would almost bet on 64-67 on race day.

If the water temp is between 64-67* on race day then we'll be fine. It will be cold at first but will warm up over the course of 2.4 miles.  The water temps at St. George apparently was 53* - or roughly the same temperature as what we have now.  Every degree above that is going to be better than having to swim in that!

I can totally handle 64-67ish degrees- I would be super happy with those temps!  I raced White Lake HIM in a sleeveless and that was 68 degrees on race day and I was totally fine.  Let's hope the water warms up to that on race day, though I'm not counting on it.

I raced CDA 2 years ago and it was pretty cold then too. I wore a scuba hood that covered most of the face and all the neck down onto the upper chest and back+booties+SEAL goggles. I was very comfortable and had a great swim. no sputtering or cramps. the scuba hood can be bought on line for around $25. well worth it!

looks like the water temp is psuhing mid 50's now and the 10 day forecast calls for a few days of decent weather and warmer temps.  As long as the water is hovering around 60 it should be no problem!  CA 70.3 was 60 and I was pretty warm by the time I got out of the water.

By the way, this is my first post and this will be my first IM.  Soooooooo Stoked for June 27th!

See you there!

^^^ No, I don't think so.  I heard on race morning that they'd announced it as 59F and--having raced in 56F water recently--I think that was probably about right.  I might be mistaken...maybe they were misleading us...but, frankly, for anyone spending more than 90 minutes in the water, anything in the 50s is going to be an added challenge (and unless you're going to DNS based on the water temp on race morning, there's no getting around it...you can only consider some of the advice in this thread).

Swam this afternoon in Lake CDA for 40 minutes.  Sleeveless wetsuit, no booties, no thermo cap.  I would guess that the water was in the high 50's.  If today were raceday I could have stayed in for the full 2.4 miles.  Really was not that bad.

Up over 15° C yesterday and stayed above 14° overnight!  Looks like we may get those mid-60° temps after all.  I think I would be fine if it stayed right where it it now - especially since these readings seem to be taken from 9 feet under the surface.  Enjoy your taper, everyone!

I did my swim at St George in just under 90 minutes. My hands were basically useless for about 15 minutes. I was dressed by a volunteer in T1. (Thank You, Volunteers!) I'm a big fan of ear plugs. Cold water getting in can do a real number on your equilibrium. Good luck!
