Subject: 30th bday gift for my cycling-obsessed husband

My husband is turning 30 next month and he's an avid cyclist up here in Boston. He rides with the Harvard cycling team several mornings a week and also on weekends. His goal is to get to a Cat 3 by next year. He puts in some serious mileage and is doing races every other weekend.

So, I am not "into" cycling as much as he is. I do the occasional ride, but don't have the passion for it like he does. Simply put, he is addicted to the sport- watching it, reading about it, doing it.

So, what sort of cycling-related gift ideas do you have, COJ? Keep in mind I don't have the $$ for a new bike- as much as he would love one. He's riding an old Cannondale with bad handlebars, ratting cages and a broken Power tap. Just don't have the $$ to replace it.  I would say budget is $250 and under. I am just stuck with ideas right now, and since he bought me a beautiful diamond anniversary ring for our anniversary this past week- the pressure is really on!

Thanks!

New riding bibs or shorts, which every he prefers.  New bike shoes.  Bike jersy's, if he is anything like me.  I hate buying them cause they are so pricey.  A weekend away where he can do a ride some place new, be it organized or by himself.  Some place you can drive to

Get him a gift card from his favorite cycling store. He can select his perfect gift from that.

The powertap can be fixed for $300 plus shipping if it's the hub that's failed.  I know it's out of your budget though.  Go for cycling clothing if he doesn't already have too much (who does?) as it won't get replaced when the bike is replaced.

You can get a great tune up/minor overhaul for $100ish. Add some new bar tape and a saddle if it's worn and it'll be like a new bike. But he'd be without the bike for a few days.

If it were me (and I'm much like your husband in my passion for cycling) I'd just want a gift card to the bike shop. I'm a picky bastard.

Cool! Liking the ideas guys. I know he wants some Asos bib shorts....and yeah, as Graceful Dave says - he is a picky bistard, too. ;-) Maybe it's inherent in cyclists? JK

What first jumped out at me was the bars.  You can buy a NICE carbon drop bar for your price range I think.

I"m dubious of bike clothing.  I know that after all my searching, I'm pretty loyal to a particular style and brand (fit wise).  If anything, get the same thing he has.  Try not to be too adventrous with new items...  Just a thought.  My father in law called me to see if I wanted him to get me some bike shorts that were on sale.  I told him to save his money.  No point of getting something I may not like or wear just cuz it's on sale.

I'm with Kido on getting him nice bars, or at least a gift card at a shop to get himself some.

Bars are tough, I'm picky about the shape of the drops.  Actually I'm picky about any part of the bike that touches my body.  You could actually book him for a couple of hours with a fit guru.  ST, Specialized and a few other places list a number of good fitters around.  Book a shorter fit if the bike fits well and tell him to pick out a set of bars that you will buy during the session.

my vote goes to a gift card yeah its not as personal but it will allow him to get what he really wants for him or his bike

These are awesome,I would love to get these as a gift. And if  hes winning races on the old wore out Cannondale, dont fix anything, bad karma! I wish I had an old Caad 9, they are beasts! Its way more important to look good as you blow by people on 6000.00 bikes.Wink

A years subscription to CycleSport Magazine. It is, hands down, the greatest cycling magazine I have ever seen. I like it soooo much better than Velonews/RoadBikeAction/Bicycling/etc.

I live month to month for my new issue and actually read it cover to cover.

Great mag!
