MaverickNH - 2010-06-01 10:51 AM So, in the meantime while Garmin works on tuning their OWS function, I'm thinking of ways to secure my 310XT head unit to a swim cap.

I'm thinking I can take the mount segment from the v1 quick-release wristband and anchor it to a cap with snap-rivets, then use a 2nd cap over.

Thanks for that write-up.  I have it downloaded, but I guess I'll try it in my swim cap this afternoon.

I assume it is ok to have the new update and use it with a swim cap right?  Or should I keep it off that "swim" setting if I do it that way?

Honestly just leave the swim setting off.  This way you can still use some of the other functions (alert, distance, etc...).

I experimented with several different methods of attaching the unit via a quick release, etc.  The problem that continued to exist is that the head unit (and whatever you're attaching it to) wants to basically tip over or wobble while you're swimming.
I've gone to just putting it under my swim cap and haven't had any problems.  Just don't pull the cap down too far so that the hard plastic under the garmin is pushed down onto your head.

I have done more than 10 ows with the new firmware for 310xt.

I found when I swam in a pond the Garmin was very generous with distance. I have measured distances via aerial photos here on BT and do easy to mark places like beach to power lines..things that don't move and Garmin can be about 10-20% longer. Yet when I did some ocean swims it seems to be more accurate and my pace is quite a bit slower.

Any ideas why the difference?

I wondered if the pond surrounded by trees may be different than open beach and ocean.

I've done a few OWS since I downloaded the new software, and the measurements (on a pre-measured course) come up as more than twice what I really swam. Just like it did before the software update. 2.5 miles on the Garmin as opposed to 1.1 miles measured - that's quite a difference. Oh well.

Are you sure that you enabled "swim mode"?  You have to do that in the "Other Options".

How do you get to swim mode?  I am having the same issues as Lisac. I go to other in the multisport mode. Is there an actual "swim" mode? Thanks

Put the watch in "other" mode

Then "Settings" -> "Other Settings" at the bottom there is an option for "Swim"

Did an OWS yesterday, it was maybe 50m off on 600.
