Subject: Moving (sort of Rant)
So my wife and I are moving an hour south of my job to be closer to her job. It wont actually affect my commute all that much as right now I take a local bus and after we move I will take a commuter train that will be just as fast if not faster. None of that bothers me. What bothers me is moving in general. First how the hell did we collect so much stuff in the 2 years we have been in our current place? it just doesn't end! Boxes of stuff and empty boxes, shelves full of junk I don't think I have ever seen before, tubs of stuff my wife has for her job but has never taken to it. We have been packing every night and almost all weekend for the last 2 weeks it feels like and still have a lot to do before we actually move everything on Saturday. Not to mention that making sure the yard is up to snuff with an extra good mowing, weed pulling, etc, and cleaning out the dusty basement means my eyes are killing me from allergies and I feel like I want to rip them out. Moving should not be so hard! I go to work now to get away from packing, which is just wrong!

It's time to purge.
When things were not used for the past year, toss.
When things are still in their boxes, toss.
When things doesn't look good to you at the moment you're packing, toss.

The moto is: "When in doubt, toss it out".

It is amazing how much stuff we accumulate.  We moved about 5 times in the first 4 years of our marriage, and then again about 3 years later.  Our last move was about 10 or 11 years ago, and we are starting to think about downsizing to a smaller place now that the kids are out.

My tip for now is to use the packing as an opportunity to purge.  If you haven't noticed or used it in a year or two, you don't need it.  If you have enough junk, sometimes Goodwill or similar places will do a pick up at your house.  We filled our living room at the last move with stuff.  (I think we have gotten enough stuff since then to replace it all, hahaha).

When you get to the new place, it is another opportunity to clear things out.  Only unpack absolute necessities (minimum of the pots and pans, work clothes, etc).  If you need and use something, take it from the packing box, then put it away where it will live.  At the end of a month, anything still in a box (other than seasonal things) is probably not going to be missed.  Get rid of it. If it is decorative, decide if it is still meaningfull then put it where it will live.  Otherwise, it goes away.

We also try to periodically purge things from the house - about once every year or two.  I think stuff breeds when we are out of the house.

There are many laws that govern the universe.  You are probably familiar with the ones they teach in physics: gravity, thermo, etc.  They do not, however, teach you about the universal law of ever-expanding cr@p.  Simply said, cr@p will expand to fill however much room you have to store it.  This is a sad, but undeniable universal law.

I'm with everybody else on using moving as a reason to get rid of stuff. We had water come into our basement in February, and while no personal property was damaged, we had to remove everything so we could pull out carpet, trim, drywall, etc because it had all been sitting in water. We used that as an opportunity to get rid of stuff that we thought we were going to use but never did. And stuff that we maybe used to use a lot, but now never do.

I call it decrapifying.  I've moved 5 times in 5 years (thankfully extended my current lease another year last night).  Before that It was something like 15 moves since graduating high school in 1995.   I hate moving with a passion but I've gotten pretty darn good at it.

Just do what my husband does.  Toss things into boxes willy nilly, half-full, and tape them up.  Move them directly into the next house's garage or attic space and forget about them.  Then, in five years, refuse to throw them away even if you end up parking your car outside in a house that has FOUR garage stalls.  In Minnesota (think feet of snow on car on morning before work).

HAHAHA I love that universal rule, and the Goldfish idea.

we are using this time to get ride of a bunch of stuff, which is why the packing is taking so long. Half of our living room is a pile to go to goodwill, we dropped off a carload of stuff at the local free electronics recylcing center, have an entire recycling can (one of the giant street ones) full of recyled paper, boxes and stuff, our trash is stuffed, and we have more coming. It just takes so long to go through every little thing to make sure it is something we need. I got rid or two full bags of clothes for that pile as well. I just cant believe we have so much stuff after only two years!

oh well, if everything goes as planned we should be able to consolidate down to just what we need, still a day to relax and a cold beer would be much appriciated about now.

I take pride of the time when I moved out of my rental apt where I lived for 5 years into my new place.  It took a total of 3.5 hours to pick up Uhaul, load,  drive to destination, unload, and return truck.  6 people involved in the move.
I am still constantly purging, although at the same time accumulated quite a few pieces of furniture.
One thing I still hold on to are the 2 boxes of grad school research materials and thesis, even though the work I do now has nothing to do with them.  May be they are the next thing to go.

Have fun packing/unpacking.

I moved three times in three years.   On the last move, I finally opened boxes that had not been opened since move 1.   I sure hauled alot of stuff accross the country to donate.....

If all goes well, I'll never move again! My husband and I are very young and say "Our kids can move us when we're dead." I feel for ya!

Thorw lots away, it's less you have to unpack on the other side.
