I am trying to decide which IM to do as my first full.  As far as training scheduling goes, May is the best month for an event for me (Utah) but I have to admit I wouldn't mind having a few more months to prepare.  Any one do both and have a strong opinion about one over the other?

I highly recommend Utah.  Its a tough course, but one of the most beautiful places in the world, and really the only 'destination' IM in the U.S.  If you're taking a family that's a definite bonus.

YOu may want to look at some race reports of IMSG. I think it was fairly brutal. There were a higher than usual number of DNF's. If you are a swimmer that is going to be in the water longer than say 1:20, your risk of coming out frozen like an ice cube is high! My coaches say it is now considered the hardest IM in the United States. The hills never stop on the bike AND run. I guess it depends what your experience is and how much outside training you can get in before.

Even more reason to do Utah

Utah was my first.  Yes it is brutal.  The water is freezing and the hills just keep on coming.  The thing to keep in mind when considering St. George is not the course, but the weather.  If it was any other day but that Saturday I would say most people would have DNS.  The days leading up to the race and even the last leg of the bike the winds were brutal.  I am a big guy 250 lb and I was getting blown all over the road the last 10 miles.  However,  I would recommend it.  I had a great time. St. George is a little hard to get to if you can't drive there, but it is great place.  I plan on doing it again in a couple of years.

I did Utah and had the time of my life, it was my first IM as well. Yes its tough, hilly and the swim is cold. I chose it because I did NOT want flat. Such a beautiful area, amazing people and so much to do. I was there a week to acclimate as well as just be a tourist.

The ONLY reason I am not doing SG again is that I have really bad asthma and had alot of breathing issues especially during the run from altitude(still finished in 14:09). It took a while for my lungs to feel normal again.

Plus, there is that idea of saying "I did St.George!'

Having done IMSG, my take on it is that the run is really the killer.  I came off the bike badly dehydrated, but probably could have recovered on the majority of other IM runs...St George starts with three miles of mostly nonstop uphill, culminating in about a 1/3 mile 10%+ grade climb (which you'll do again on lap two) and then just carries on with continuous rollers and one very long grade (again you see it on both laps, going down then right back up).  I'm a strong runner (solidly sub-4 for marathon) and trained a lot of hills in preparation, but it still wore me down after a tough ride.

It's all doable, but you need to be prepared for a demanding run and I think a lot of people in cold weather localities may not get in the hills they need on the bike over the winter with such an early race date.  Just some things to consider.

PennState - 2010-05-31 11:49 AM Lake Placid is a great venue, but honestly this will be my last year for a bit as the swim course has become too crowded with the number of entrants (3,000). Otherwise I would highly recommend LP. One other thing is that LP is very expensive (accomodations)

How much does the number of entrants vary among venues?  I thought the caps were similar at each event.

Do it where you know best, Utah.  It'll take a lot of adjusting to a new place out of the mix.  My .02.

some courses are less able to accomodate large numbers. LP has a small lake where the swim occurs so the 3,000 entrants is a problem.

IMSG didn't have even close to 3,000 racers did it? (correct me if I'm wrong)

No, you're right.  At the prerace briefing, I think they said they expected something over 2000 starters...from the official results, it looks like they ended up with 1877 starters (and 1634 finishers...so right about 13% DNF).

Thanks for the info.  I am planning on registering for my first IM and was leaning toward LP.  However, this has me thinking Coeur d'Alene might be a better choice.  Any thoughts?  Should potential over crowding issues regarding the swim at LP make a first time IM'er change to an alternative?  Swimming is my weakest event but I'm not afraid of a challenge!

If you are concerned with the swim start, assuming you are not trying to KQ, you can hang way to the back where its not so crazy. Alot of people at Utah were still on the beach when the cannon went off. I imagine this would be a much calmer place to be.

I don't know when LP upped the numbers but I did it in 2007 - start wasn't too bad then. I loved LP. I thought the lake swim was great. The crowds were great, the course was beautiful and just hilly enough too get me out of my aero position enough. The olympic village is great too!
