Pre-race routine:

Tried to keep warm and dry
Event warmup:

Short swim
Swim
  • 28m 44s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 55s / 100 meters
Comments:

Start went okay but I struggled with my breathing. Swimming into wind and waves. Halfway through I swallowed lake water and proceeded to vomit. Not very pleasant. I struggled with sighting throughout and drifted way left at one point. Not usually a problem for me. Probaly worst swim I have had in an event.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better.
Transition 1
  • 01m 21s
Comments:

Slow as I felt really fatigued after swim.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot really.
Bike
  • 1h 16m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.53 mile/hr
Comments:

Once you come out of transition you run about 300m before mount line. This time is included in bike split. First mile was therefore about 4.5 min. After recent knee trouble I took my time for first lap. Hammered second lap once I knew it felt okay. Rain stopped half way through but wind increased. Seemed to have a 20mph head wind for 3/4 of lap.
What would you do differently?:

Couldn't have pushed harder. Wind curbed my speed.
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Nothing to report.
Run
  • 50m 43s
  • 5.86 miles
  • 08m 39s  min/mile
Comments:

Hard, hard course. First lap was really hard and I felt really demoralised that I had to do it again! Lack of training this month really showed in the run course. I just had nothing left and couldn't have gone any quicker.
What would you do differently?:

Not a lot. If I hadn't injured my knee 18 days out I would have probably taken a couple of minutes out of this.
Post race
Warm down:

Beer n BBQ!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Knee injury 18 days earlier.

Event comments:

I gave the best perfomance I could with my current fitness. Swim was slower than I expected but so was everyone elses. Bike was ok. Run was bloody hard and I didn't enjoy it one bit. Last years run course was probably easier.
