This is embarrassing to bring up, but I have to ask for advice...  Does anyone get sore nipples during extended work outs?  This morning I did a Brick of 15 miles of the bike, transitioning to a 5k run.  About a quater of the way into the run I noticed my nipples were getting aggravated.  After the work out I could barely even wash them they were so tender!

So how do you prevent this?

Duct tape.  Seriously, it works.

Whenever I go for a run, a ride, or a brick, I put duct tape on the nipples.  At the end of my race today, I remember why I do it - I saw too many people with blood down their shirts coming from their nipples.

It's normal for men. Just put some bandaids on. It works wonders, so I have been told. If Bandaids are out (chest hair issues) then try Bodyglide. It's available at most running stores. I swear by it for chafing.

Doesn't all that preparation go to pot when you tear your nipples off during duct tape removal? Ouch! What about just using a tight shirt?

Btw, I noticed a bit of nipple chafing after my ride yesterday. Maybe the time has come for the Bro/Mansiere for triathletes...

I have had this problem as well. The band-aid solution works for me but as pointed out removal can be a painful experience. Applying vaseline before a run may help.  I have also found Body Glide to be effective. Avoid cotton shirts for sure. A proper running shirt that wicks away moisture should help.

You can also buy nipple guards at any running store

Elastoplast Dots are small round bandages that do the job just fine. You can find a similar product in the BandAid brand if you are brand loyal. They only cost about $3 for 50. I wear them all the time. Worth their weight in gold

I remember once while running a marathon in drizzling rain. I passed by two guys who were in obvious discomfort from their bleeding nipples. I passed them my handy dandy tiny tube of vaseling (I keep for chaffing issues) I swear one of them wanted to kiss me he was so thankfull.

If you are like me and prone to breakouts (yes at 41!) then Vasaline is not such a fabulous thing. I don't break out from Bodyglide.

I have this problem and body glide works well. I haven't tried duct tape or bandaids because of the hair issue. I've also noticed that a tight top helps. Next time they get sore, I think I'll do without a shirt.

What exactly is this Body Glide? I've heard of it for swimming and now for sore nipples. Do you just lather up in the stuff before a race?

The trick is to remove the adhesive while you're still sweaty.

Body glide is a stick lubricant that is non staining and works very well. Personally I prefer the Elastoplast Dots solution I have found that Body Glide isn't very helpful on longer runs especially after your jersey is completely drenched.

Go with the bandaids, I'll take the 2 seconds of pain from ripping them off over the ~60mins of agony without them. Except when it hot and humid, sometimes they will fall off.

Prevention? Technical material running shirt/singlet, never cotton. Nothing worse than coming home and noticing nice little blood spots on the ol' T-shirt.

Bandaids work fine.

But kisses make them all better!

Although I truely feel your pain...I must say a very tiny grin of retribution squeezed onto my face when I read this post.  All I could think was...."Ahh...they might finally get how hard it is to breastfeed a baby.  Suck it up, boys."

Ok...just kidding...it sounds very painful and having had bleeding nipples myself, for a totally different reason, I DO feel your pain.  I had no idea this even happened to you guys!

As a girl who has definite breasts, the only comment I can think of here is "Ow"  or "Ow, Ow, Ow" in time with running stride.

Topless, ok - topless while running?  I don't think so.

My wife laughs at me because of my pain.  She says "Now you know what its like having a baby nibbling on you!"  Then she points, and laughs manically.

Thanks for the tips!  I think I'll try the Band-aid option.

Yup! You can put it on everywhere....feet, thighs, neck, arms, anywhere that indiscriminant chaffing can occur. It took my one rash on my inner arms to buy the stuff.

A tight stretchy shirt worked for me and it seems so much easier than ripping duct tape off your nipples.
