Sunny
Total Time = 1h 59m 49s
Overall Rank = 186/226
Age Group = M 40-44
Age Group Rank = 28/38
Pre-race routine:

Powerbar and coffee before leaving house. Also took Mylanta due to upset stomach.
Event warmup:

Set up transition early. J and I talked to Dean, Kim, and Milton.
Swim
  • 30m 46s
  • 1094 yards
  • 02m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Struggled more than expected on the swim. It was very up and down. I would get into a really good rhythm at times, but had spells where I would need to stop and catch my breath. I think I am out of practice in open water. My sighting was a little better, but the breaks need to be fewer and briefer.
What would you do differently?:

Push harder and keep the rhythm going when I have it.
Transition 1
  • 03m 30s
Comments:

Decent transition. No wasted time. Had to sit down to get wetsuit off, but was efficient.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing here.
Bike
  • 41m 53s
  • 14.29 miles
  • 20.47 mile/hr
Comments:

Solid bike. Slower than last year by about three minutes, but things are starting to come around with the increase in riding over the past two months.
What would you do differently?:

Probably could have picked up some time by getting out of the saddle a couple of times on the bigger hills to build momentum.
Transition 2
  • 02m 23s
Comments:

Solid transition. Found my bag and got changed quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 41m 17s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 13m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

Yikes. Here is where my dropoff in the past year really showed up. I thought that the trail running that I have done lately might have prepared me better, but it was a struggle on the uphills. The running definitely needs work.
What would you do differently?:

HTFU
Post race
Warm down:

Cheered Milton in, and hung out with Dean, Kim, and J until the T2 bags were delivered.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Current fitness and weight increase over last year.

Event comments:

Not the race I was hoping for, but probably an accurate depiction of where I am right now. Seven and a half minute drop off from last year's time - at least at the slower paces my HR was lower than it was last year - maybe I pushed harder last year - I'm not sure. I still had a great time as I love this race, but it was a little disheartening to know what an uphill battle I still face to get back to where I was a year ago. I will need to focus a lot on swimming in between Deuces and Alcatraz, and really need to work the running a little harder. The bike is thisclose - just need to keep working at it, but will need to sacrifice a little to get the swim and run where they need to be for my races later in the season.

Great job on this race. I know your time was slower but you did it and now have an idea on what to work on. Your bike time was fast in your AG and the trail run was different than a flat asphalt 5k.

Good race, Brian! Swimming sucks for many of us, and I was disappointed in the swim, too. But I know you will keep working on it and will conquer the OWS battles at Show Low and Alcatraz!
