Subject: Shipping a bike ahead of time
For those that have done races that involved shipping your bike & TriBikeTransport(or similar) isn't available, have you tried shipping your bike to the hotel ahead of time?  I'd like to avoid the airline checked bag fee for the bike($150+) if possible.

I shipped from Chicago down to Miami in 2006. It was like 45 bucks each way, I used a bike box. I called the hotel ahead of time just to give them the 411 but I arrived before the bike away. It was a nervous feeling hoping the bike would make it. It would have cost a lot more money if I used guarnateed shipping.

I think this was Fed Ex, its been awhile. I'm sure it cost much more now.

check to see if the hotel charges for holding it. I was able to ship via fedex for a reasonable price, but after the hotel holding charges, it hurt the cost savings.
