Subject: Training w/ broken wrist
Well I'm officially 9 weeks and 4 days from IM Wisconsin and yesterday my training came to a complete halt. I was cut off by a car and now have a broken wrist and seperated shoulder. My question is to any and all who have done bike and/or run training with a cast. Is this still feasible or am I dreaming that I can still train (to not nearly the quality, but still train) inside on the trainer with 1 arm, and run outside???? Any feedback would be appreciated...

Glad you don't have more serious injuries!  Even though it totally sucks about the shoulder and wrist!

How bad is the separated shoulder?

I have run with a full arm cast....it's heavy, but you can still do it.  I would think biking on the trainer ( A LOT!) is ok as well.

That said, the shoulder is your bigger concern.  Let that heal up before you start running and moving it all over the place!

Good luck!

Hi Craig -

No need to fret. The run and the bike shouldn't be a problem. . I broke my wrist (for the third time) on Dec 24th. I was out on the bike the first week in January (mainly because the weather was nice again). Running began as soon as the throbbing went away.

It's a bit annoying with a cast...gets a little smelly and itchy...but you look super cool training with an injury! I convinced the doctor to put me in a brace after 3-4 weeks, which made the training even easier.

The bike went well...aerobars and all...just be careful clipping in and out...I lost my balance once and fell...exactly what the Dr. told me not to do. Oh well, I survived, and the wrist is doing all right.

I wasn't able to swim, that was the hardest thing. And putting full pressure on my wrist during the stroke was hard as well...Comes back with time though. You can buy a waterproof cover for the cast so you can swim...maybe $50-75?

And...don't repeat my good fortune...about 3 weeks after getting the cast off, I got hit by a car...a little harder to train when you can't move your leg...so be happy it's only a wrist!

Safe training and good luck!
Scott

Does anyone have any experiences (good, bad, or other) with the waterproof casts that you can get wet? Not so much for swimming, but it sure would nice to shower after a 15 mile run or 80 miles on the trainer....

If I were you I would definately get the water proof cast.  Actually the fiberglass is water proof on all casts it is just the padding in the cast that is not.  What you need is goretex cast padding.  You can swim in it bathe in it etc.  Let the water drain out and pat it dry.  Takes probably 30-45 minutes for it to get completely dry.  They still smell a little but are MUCH better than regular esp if you are going to be doing a lot of sweating in it.  Call who ever you are seeing and make sure they have the goretex and if not get them to order it for you.

Some wrist fractures can be treated in a short arm (below the elbow) cast, others need a long arm (above the elbow) for a few weeks first.  I do not know of any insurance compaines that will pay for the water proof cast so you will have to pay for it out of pocket.  If it is a fracture that can be treated in a cast (I'm assuming it is)  you should be good to go and cast free by race day   If you can get away with a short arm cast its not going to slow you down too much.  the AC separation may hurt you more.  Hope this helps....feel free to PM me if you have any other questions -SMO

The easiest thing for a shower is plastic bag and some rubber bands.

Goretex cast would be the way to go...but if not, then as far as a shower goes, grab a plastic baggie...the thinner the better. Put your cast in and place a couple rubber bands at the top. It you're really concerned...the shower with your arm above your head while having it in the baggie...nothing but exciting times ahead!

This has worked well for my 3 previous casts. The first two were up to the bicep...the last one was only to the forearm thank goodness...the forearm ones are much easier to manage.

I know nothing on the subject...but wanted to say I hope you heal fast and that you are able to race IM Moo. I'm glad you were not hurt worse...accidents suck! Trust Sue..she is an ortho. Doc...so you are getting good free advice.

I've been fortunate enough (knock on wood) never to train in a cast, but I'm just getting over a 1st degree (least serious) AC separation.  It really hasn't hampered me on the bike, running made it ache a little at first. Assuming it's the same side as the broken wrist, I'd be careful about swinging the cast around with a separated shoulder.  That will really aggravate it.  Maybe run in a sling???

well, I wasn't training for an IM or anything, but when I separated my shoulder a few years ago it was several months before I could swim again.

Good luck to you and I hope you heal fast.

All I suggest is to be very careful on the swim if you will have to swim with your cast. I would be really pissed off if you clubbed me with that thing, accidently or not.

hoping to have it off 2-3 weeks before the IM, don't think the race officials would let me do it with it on, although who knows...
