so im wearing my friends sisters number and running with him, and hes really trying to build up his physique and wanting to RACE the peachtree not just fun run it. Im having a hard time explaining that i doubt that its possible to really have a good showing when we have numbers in the 50ks. as ive never run the race he doesnt really trust me. Ive tried to read a few race reports on here and most agree with me. The fastest hes gonna go is 45 mins, so is that reasonable from such a late starting group?

If you're not in a time group it's gonna be rough.  and starting at 9am is going to be brutal b/c of the heat.  I'm shooting to be sub-seeded next year which is going to take knocking off 2 minutes on my 5k.  The last time I started that late the first mile to mile and a half was killer due to the number of walkers

It is possible but not easy. I ran 48 one year from I think corral 7 may have been 6 or 5 though. I know I was running under someone else's number. What I did was line up on the front line of my corral so when the gun went I was able to start running. Also stick to the left side. There are usually more walkers on the right (or suppose to be) or in the middle you could get trapped in the early congestion. I also had met a guy who was also wanting to run 48 so I basically ran on his heels for most of the race. He was taller and bigger and had an easier time cutting through the crowd. There was lots of weaving but I don't remember having to walk or really slow down much. I know when we finished there were people with numbers in the 2's and 3's crossing with us. It was kind of fun to pass tons of people. Will people think you are obnoxious for weaving in and out and around walkers/slow pokes? Maybe but who cares, it is technically a race and IMO the point is to run as fast as you can.

I think too this year might be a little different since everyone is getting a timing chip and supposedly the groups are better corralled. I would think in the 5's people would be running under 10 minute miles so that should be too hard to get past.

I'll be racing the PRR this year...i got lucky enough to qualify as top seeded (1A) and it'll be a nice change to not have to dodge a bazillion ppl.

good luck and have a good race!

I think your friends best bet is to pick another race to "race" and treat the Peachtree as a good workout. I was in sub-seeded last year and even that affected my time by a lot. After a bit, it cleared up so I could run but the first mile was really slow.

I never tried to "race" the Peachtree until last year when I was a seeded runner. Let me tell you that is the ONLY way to be able to race there. I ran under 40 min and felt like I was sitting still a couple of times. Tell your friend if he wants to race next year he needs to go out and run a qualifying time to get up front.

Unless you are up there in the top group or with the Kenyans it isn't a good race to take seriously.  I did my first one last year and even though I'm a slow runner my time went down and the faster people were too busy weaving to make progress.  Really for the first 1/4 mile you just do a fast walk anyways since it is too crowded and if you can manage a jog by a mile you are doing well.  I felt like it opened up fairly well after that until towards the last couple of miles becuase a lot of people were walking by then.

It might be a little better this year since they broke up the time groups more and you are placed by official times.  Regardless just enjoy the race because it is a fun race.  Especially when people hand you beer during your run!!!

My 10K pr is 47:45 and my goal for PTRR is a sub-45.  I think I'm in the shape to do it and I am seeded in 1A.  Do I stand a chance in heck of getting there?  I'll know what kind of shape I'm in after the Possum Trot 10K this weekend.

Not sure, but I would say your best strategy is to line up at the front of your corral. Also your goal time has to account for a really slow first mile, I would say at least a minute or so slower than if you were trying to run even splits.

I absolutely think you can accomplish that goal.  I ran a 10k PR last year from time group 1A. It was the first time I pushed up to the front of the time group and I really didn't feel any crowd problems after the first 1/4 mile or so, and even that wasn't too bad, just a little weaving.  I think that is the key because then you don't have to run through anyone in TG 1A, and the hope is that the seeded and subseded runners shouldn't slow down a 45:00 10k runner.

ATLrunr is right, as your first mile will take a hit from the crowd right at the start, but miles 2 & 3 are mostly downhill, so you can make up for it there. The weather in last year's race was very cooperative though. It was one of the coolest PRR starts ever, and it doesn't look like we're headed for anything like that this year!

Good luck on your goal time!

The PRR race numbers are here.  Mine arrived at my house yesterday.  I've got a # in the 2000's.  I ran a small 5K race this morning and finished 3rd in my age group.  I've got an 8K race scheduled for next week with the PRR just one week after that.  I'm starting to think that this could be a real race after all!

I almost look forward to a jostling first mile, to prevent me from setting too fast a pace.
