Pre-race routine:

Took a nap about 12:30. We were out the door about 3. Got registered and set up in transition at 4:15, and proceeded to wait around in the 80 degree heat until we started at 6:05. Brutal.
Swim

  • 880 yards
  • 03m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim, and I struggled. Stopped to rest on kayak twice. Did a lot of breast stroke and back kicking. The recreational boats didn't help the wake. That was just rude. Haven't decided if I am going to buy my rented wet suit yet. Thinking about it since it fits and I could really use it to PRACTICE more open water. Plus, it would be nice for diving.
What would you do differently?:

More open water swim training. RELAX.
Transition 1

What would you do differently?:

nothing
Bike

Comments:

Stopped to help a fellow triathlete put her chain back on her bike. Took about 30 seconds. She said she didn't know how to fix it. How can you be a triathlete and not know how your bike works? Just curious.

The volunteers at the turn around were not very vocal about the fact that the water tent was the turn around. Went about 50 feet before I stopped and yelled back. Another guy went passed it in front of me. I told other riders heading that way as I was going back that they needed to turn at the water station.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. This was a great ride.

Transition 2
  • 00m 49s
Comments:

Felt this was a good transition
What would you do differently?:

Run barefoot!
Run
  • 30m 47s
  • 3 miles
  • 10m 16s  min/mile
Comments:

I was really tired on this run. Didn't have a problem going from bike to run. Was just wiped out because of the heat. It was still so hot at 7 pm. The water stop was Gatorade and I really needed water.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate more on the bike with water - not Gatorade.
Post race
Warm down:

Poured a bottle of water all over me to keep from overheating. Grabbed a cold Coors Banquet. Had a 5 minute chair massage to get right shoulder kink out from under my shoulder blade. Felt fantastic.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Overheated

Event comments:

This race was tough for me because of the open water and the heat. I realize my next event in July is going to be twice as long, so decided I am hiring a Crossfit coach. I absolutely hate running anytime after 11 am. It is too hot. Prefer the mornings. Probably won't do this race next year. Went home a took an ice bath, which felt fabulous! Ate a piece of pizza and took two swigs of a beer. Tried to go to bed about 11 (which is late for me), and couldn't sleep.

I finished and that is important, but as far as personal accomplishment, I did terrible. Mind over matter.

Deb - Great job in dealing with the heat and completing the race.  You're a shining example of what makes triathlon and triathletes so great, stopping to help with the bike chain was awesome.

I'm so glad to have a wetsuit of my own.  Going out with my training group and doing the OWS sessions made a big difference for me.  I was so much more comfortable during my race than I was the first couple of times in the open water.
