Subject: Pros & Cons of using your 6 year old as a training tool
So my husband and oldest daughter are in Oklahoma City for the Women's Softball College World Series. I'm home with Liv, our six year old.  Normally I head out early  for whatever crazy workout I have planned for the day and hubby is happy to be home with the girls.  So, I decide why not hook Liv's Trek to my mountain bike and head out for a hilly, challenging 8.5 mile ride through our beautiful mountain desert trails.  Although it wouldn't be a long ride, the climbs plus the weight of Liv and the Trek would be great resistance.  Now that we're back, I have come to the conclusion there are many pros and cons of using a six year old as a training tool.

Pros:
1.  Her short little bursts of furious peddaling on climbs actually gave my legs a few seconds of relief (however those bursts were few and far in between)
2.  48 pounds of kid is great resistance training
3.  2.5 miles into a 3 mile climb hearing her guttural cry of "I can feel the burrrrrrn baby, I can feel the burn!" made me laugh so hard I forgot momentarily about the actual burn I was feeling
4.  Picking up some speed on the downhills and hearing her yell "Oh yeaaahhhh...rock and roll!"

Cons:
1.  Pulling 48 pounds of kid uphill for miles
2.  Having to institute a No Question Rule While Climbing And Mommy is Breathing Really Hard after the following questions:
     -do lizards have thumbs?
-what would happen if I fell off and rolled all the way back down the hill?
-why was our town underwater millions of years ago?
3.  The question any parent traveling with a child dreads:  are we almost there?
4.  Her claiming that 'my butt cheeks are a lot sorer than yours' over and over

In all, a fabulous ride with my daughter.  I'll take both the pros and the cons for a great ride like that!

I'd say 98% of all my runs are done while pushing my 9 month old in the jogging stroller, and half of those runs also include my 5 year old riding alongside on her bike, so I know how you feel.  :D

The days that I don't have to push or drag anybody along with me I feel like I'm flying!  :D

My daughter (about to turn 5) gets attached to the back of my mountain bike via  Tag-a Long (same concept as your Trek it sounds like).  What I've learned:

I try and get her to find as many squirrels as possible.  This can occupy the majority of her attention, and keeps the questions down.

She is really enthusiastic when I ask for her help pedaling, and while her little legs don't provide much in the way of horse power, it does actually help a little.

It's important to let her know that doing tricks (usually some variation of "Look, only one hand!") are not allowed on bumpy descents.  Haven't lost her off the back, yet, but would really not ever want that scenario to play out.

Combining the ride with a stop at the playground is a great way to hear, "You're the best Dad ever!" Smile

That makes for a great way to end the ride!

I LOVE this! The fact that she is having a great time (mostly) and knows the pain (the burrrnnnn) is awesome. All in all, I'd put a + in the win column.

Sounds fun.  We just got a tag along for our 4 year old.  We went bike camping last weekend with her.  I had her on my bike and DH had her trailer loaded with our gear.

10 mile ride on an old canal towpath, camp, ride 10 more miles on the trail, then train ride back to the car.

I was surprised to not hear more are we there yets, than I did.

A good time was had by all.

My 9 yr old comes on short runs with me occasionally - the last time it was pretty hot and I was just having an off day, and as she was sprinting along during mile 3 at about an 8:30 pace and chit chatting away I had to institute a "no talking while mom is about to die" rule.

I take my two youngest ones (2.5 and 3.5 years) on almost all of my bike rides.  Combined they weigh in at about 60 lbs, plus all of their toys, drinks, trailer etc it is probably closer to 75lbs.   Great resistance training for sure.  They absolutely love going, always asking when we are going next.  They get to see so much more from the bike trailer then they get to in their car seats, they love to stare out at all the animals (riding in the country).

We also typically end the ride at a playground for some good fun.  I take my older kids with me for some of my runs, which again usually ends at a playground or a park.
