Pre-race routine:

After doing IMMOO last year, I admit I'm pulling back on the training a bit this year and trying to go about things a little differently.

For instance, last year I would never have dreamed about playing four softball games on a scorching hot day the day before a race. This year? Hey, why not? Last year, I would have never done anything to jeopardize my training for IM. This year? I thought, "Hey, while out playing softball, let's try to take that extra base and end up rolling my ankle sliding into second!!"

So, aching and limpy, with a golfball-sized swelling on top of my right foot, I arrived at Lake Mills, ready to take on the day. Yeah, let's just say I wasn't expecting to be setting any PR's. I was just hoping to be able to run the run.

During T-setup, I was glad to see many of the Donks I hadn't seen in a while-- really, since IMMOO. It was great to catch up with and say "Howdy" to jmwebs, clint, bscharff, AJ, Mr. Caserole, Patrick and even got to meet trainergirlmick. I'm sure there were others, but I'm old and my blood sugar is low and I have the memory of an untrainable dog.
Event warmup:

The day was gray and overcast, with what looked to be storm clouds moving in. It was a stark contrast with the water, which for the first time I can remember at this tri, felt warm and comfortable. For a moment, I thought I was back in Memphis. Then I got out of the water to line-up on the cold, cold sand and I was reminded very quickly that I was, in fact, in Lake Mills.

Swim
  • 09m 17s
  • 440 yards
  • 02m 07s / 100 yards
Comments:

Honestly, I've given up trying to figure this out. My swims keep getting better at Memphis (which was just two weeks ago) and worse at Lake MIlls.

My training has been OK. The water was warm and comfy. Traffic was bad as always, but no worse than usual. I have no idea why I was 20 second slower than last year, which was slow to begin with. Maybe I'm being assessed an "Old Guy" penalty.

There was a considerable chop once we got to the outer buoys and I drank some lake. Er... I mean, I took the opportunity to hydrate myself for the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Two words: Flip pers.

Transition 1
  • 02m 25s
Comments:

Considering I took 3:00 here last year, sheesh, 2:25? Are you kidding me? It's like I became the Human Hurricane.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Because you can't live life with regrets. You've got to just learn from every experience and move on.
Bike
  • 47m 9s
  • 16.18 miles
  • 20.59 mile/hr
Comments:

They changed up the course this year, and my computer was a little henky, so i really don't have any clue how long it actually was. The postrace results said I averaged 20.4 MPH, so I'll take their word for it.

To be honest, I thought I really hammered this course, but it turned out I was a few seconds slower than last year. On the other hand, I considerably improved my AG ranking in the bike, so who knows? I was just happy that my ankle held up through the bike.

Transition 2
  • 01m 22s
Comments:

After a 2:25 T1? My 1:22 T2 was like the passing of the wind over a duck's bill.

Don't worry, I have no idea what it means, either.

What would you do differently?:

I'd have spent that semester in Paris instead of taking the internship. Dad always said I'd regret that.

Run
  • 23m 12s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

I knew going in there's no way I could match my 21:40 from last year. Not carrying an extra 10 pounds. And certainly not with a bum ankle. To be honest, after not even being able to walk last night, I was just happy to be able to run on it all.

Too bad. Run conditions were ideal and this is the fastest running track I've ever seen-- flat, shaded and made of nicely crushed gravel. So I just found a solid pace I could sustain, tried not to push off with my right foot (so as not to tweak the ankle) and did what I could.

Altogether, I was fine with my time. My ankle simply couldn't hold up for anything faster.

What would you do differently?:

Hmm... perhaps refrain from slamming my ankle into second base, attempting a pop-up slide?
Post race
Warm down:

I don't warm down. I chill. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The rich, nutty-brown Porters I enjoyed in abundance during the off-season which now reside just north of my azz.

Event comments:

Had to bolt right after the race to get back and coach my son's T-ball game. Sorry I couldn't stick around and hang with the Donks!

As always, this was a fun, well-run race. With the conditions beings absolutely perfect to set a PR, I was disappointed my ankle prevented me from bringing my A-game, but it was fun nonetheless.

One weird thing I noticed was even though my time was a little bit slower this year, my rank within my AG was considerably higher. So special thanks to my fellow codgers for going easy on me.

Nice report Rich, and great race.  Remember, it appears there's an extra mile on the bike course.  That's about 3-minutes of time, so you can't compare that with previous races.
