Sunny
Total Time = 5h 42m 57s
Overall Rank = 196/683
Age Group = M25-29
Age Group Rank = 26/46
Pre-race routine:

Stayed at a local hotel. Carbed up Friday. Ate well at Olive Garden on Saturday. Got to bed at a reasonable hour. Woke up had two cups of coffee, a bagel with PB & Honey and a croissant the same. Drank some Gatorade and water on the ride over to Quassy.
Event warmup:

Got all my gear setup, and swam for 20s.

Swim
  • 38m 20s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 49s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt like I was going to throw up most of the swim. Weird. Drafted nearly the whole time, found slow legs to draft off I guess. I used brand new goggles and they leaked, rolled over 3 times to get the water out.

As a result my left eye was cloudy when I got out of the water and I could not see well until 5-7min on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not use brand new goggles. Not draft on slow legs.
Transition 1
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Ran with shoes on since I was unsure about the rules for shoes on bike.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe grab a gel.
Bike
  • 3h 05m 7s
  • 56 miles
  • 18.15 mile/hr
Comments:

The hills were numerous, I only stood one time, otherwise I was able to sit and ride up the hills.

I do not care for wet, curving descents. I sat up on quite a few and rode my brakes, I did not feel like crashing. I saw two people that had wiped out and probably 10 flat tires.

My chain came off once, but I quickly got it back on.

I rode consistently and my own race, but I just went too easy.
What would you do differently?:

Not be so conservative. I tried to stay within a very constrained watt range. Looking at my "Work" total I rode way to conservative. The goal was 190watts. Hills make it hard to pace, kept numbers down on the uphills, but then you get a lot of 0-120watt numbers riding the flat and start of the uphill again.

My sure my bento box was secure. I stopped before getting on the course to try and secure it. The velcro was not working. Two of the four straps were working, at one point I was down to 1 strap. Tried to fixed it while riding often. It basically just hung to the side. It held my flat kit.

I consumed:
Almost a full bottle of Gatoade
3 large mouthfuls of water
1 Almond snickers
2, maybe 3 gels.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Ran in swapped my gear and headed out.
What would you do differently?:

Not forget Garmin. Ran 200yards or so before realizing I did not have the unit. Went back and grabbed it.
Run
  • 1h 54m 30s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

Started off great. Plan was to go easy first 3 miles and then up the pace to 7:45 until mile 10 and then drop to the 7:20 range.

Stopped to pee at the 2nd aid station as well.

Instead I ran consistent until mile 10 when I died out there. The last mile I was totally out of it and just trying to hang on.

I felt awesome the first half of the run. Felt good until mile 10.
What would you do differently?:

Bring something to drink or start Gels earlier. At the 2nd aid station I tried some Cersport, nearly puked and had a cramp for about a mile. It faded. Tried Cerasport again at the 4th aid station, same result.

From there I was pouring 2-3 cups of water on myself at each station. Drinking a small amount of water, and then consumed about 2 cups of Coke the rest of the race. Had only 1 gel.

Had they had Gatorade I think I would have done maybe 10min better.

Not even look at Cerasport.
Post race
Warm down:

Drank a bottle of water. Chatted to Bobby for a minute. Drank a Muscle Milk. Got some art. Laid down. Packed up transition. Got a massage (very long and great). Sat around. Ate some food. Drove home.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

No idea what was up with the swim. Never have felt like I would throw up during a swim. It was calm so I was not getting thrown around.

Conservative bike pacing.

Little to no nutrition on the run.

Overall I did well, not as well as I had wanted but I still did pretty well.

Event comments:

Awesome event. Outside of the Cerasport, I can not say a single bad word about the event.

Nice race Aaron some pretty big hills up there I do most of my riding up there but fork further right of route 67 down in into Roxbury/Southbury.

I do see a recurring theme in your race reports on mechanical failures and nutrition issues. A detailed written race plan in advance may help you out if you don't use one already?

Anyways good start to the season for you.

I should have tried Cerasport prior to the race. I figured it would be the same as Gatorade, Accelerade, Powerade, the new Ironman drink, Infinit, but I was wrong. Talking to volunteers after they said the directions were complicated and batches were never the same (they were mixing themselves with no direction). Many athletes complained about the drink.

As for mechanical failure, dropped my chain. Not sure how a race plan can address that or the bento box. Bike was at the shop on Thursday making sure everything was good.

Live and learn. Keep moving forward.

Nice work on what sounds like a beast of a course from everything I've seen.  You were well rounded it looks like across all 3 and finished pretty strong on the run.  Hoping we cross paths again this year at some point...

Dude, I love that USA Tri kit you had on.  Never saw that one before!  It was fun chatting with you on the course.

I knew after just one sip of the Cerasport that I was gonna love it or hate it.  I know other people had problems with it too as it's not mild by any means!!  And on a day that was reasonably muggy and humid, hydration through sports drink is HUGE!

You has a solid race on a tough course.  Maybe I'll see you there again next year.  I'm definitely diggin' the REVOLUTION!

Nice job Aaron!

From all reports very challenging course add in rain too makes it more difficult.

Solid run with first and second 5 miles within seconds.

Hope to see you at Patriot...rolling course that you would do awesome at!

What was your NP and VI?
