Subject: New shoes, new pain
Hi all,
I am new around these parts but I thought I would ask a question anyway. I bought a new pair of shoes last week (Saucony motion control) and took them out this morning for the first time. I stretched like I always do -especially my shins. About 1/4mile into my run my shins started to ache and didn't let up. They still hurt more than an hour after my run. Will new shoes do this? I have had shin splints in the past but recently my stretching has controlled them. Shin splints are them most de-motivating thing for me. I had the shoes fitted at a running store, should I call them and get different shoes? Do new shoes need to be broken in before they won't cause shin splints? Any thoughts are welcome.

I don't think you should feel that kind of pain with new shoes. I didn't.

Definitely call the running store. Personally, I had to take 3 different pairs of shoes home to try on a treadmill before I found one that I liked. And that was after trying them out at the running store.

Did you bring your old shoes with you to the running store? Did you like how your old shoes felt? If so, ask them to find a similar shoe. Anyhow, go back to the store and pick out a few different pairs of shoes that you like. Take them home and try them all out on a treadmill to see how they feel after running for 20 - 30 minutes. Hopefully you'll find something that feels better.

I did take my old shoes with me-they were Brooks Ariels (I love them.) I will give them a call today. Thanks.

If the new shoes aren't working for you, don't force it. I am one cheap bastard, so I ran several months in this pair of Adidas that gave me blisters and made my knees hurt. Was I ever glad when they were worn enough that I could justify a new pair of Sauconys. Please learn from my mistake and get yourself a pair of comfortable shoes!

If you like your old shoes, why not buy them again? What year are they? I found a website selling 2003 Brooks Ariels: http://www.zappos.com/n/p/dp/394351/c/5757.html You could find more using google. If it ain't broke ...

Good luck!

I think you are right. I am going to take my new shoes back(I hope they have a decent return policy) and get the Ariels.

Did you break your new shoes in before running in them?

whenever i get new shoes, i always have to wear them around the house for a day just to get the inside molded a little bit to my foot before i go out and run in them. Maybe that could be it, did u go running w/ them straight out of the box?

I had my first real fitting for my shoes last month from a reputable running store. They told me that the shoes should feel pretty great from the start, and if I had any discomfort to bring them back and try a different pair. I hope your store was as accomodating (sp?)!
