Subject: Overtraining Burnout - Suggestions?
I guess I finally hit my moment of 'enlightenment' this morning when I tried to do my long run. Instead, my mind and body just couldn't muster up the power to continue and finish this morning's workout. I've kind of seen this coming ever since my HIM about two weeks ago when I didn't allow my body to recoup and just continued my workout sessions. So I've hit the point where i'm "burned" out and I'm just about entering the meat of my training plan (Full Iron race in Late October, about 14 weeks out).

As it stands, physically I am doing my 75-min swim, 6+ hr bike, and 3 hr run workouts in a week and I figure that'll still be there. I'm just slightly concerned of feeling mentally burned out 14 weeks before my A-Race.

Any suggestions or stories from you folks about how you coped with your training burnout, how long it lasted, or what you did to get that "feeling" again? I am planning to take about 8-10 days easy with 3 full days off, mostly swimming and easy spinning bike workouts if anything. But then also cutting back volume about 50%. Does that sound right?

At least I'm glad to realize about my burnout this early and thankful it happened this far out before my A race

Yep. Take a couple days and do something else. Rock climb, play a sport etc.

I've been dealing with this too, altho it doesn't sound nearly as sever as yours sounds...Tried to do a long brick and the idea of going out just seemed so overwhelming!  I realized then that I'd been without "that feeling" for a week or so...and I have a half IM in 2 1/2 weeks.   Ended up just taking one light day and one rest day, and made sure to eat enough as my appetite has been flaky.

Don't worry, the feeling came right back.  I would say just back off, spend a couple of days with your family or whatever you feel like you've missed while training.  Let your batteries recharge

I have beem burned out since my 1/2 two weeks ago also.  I decided to unload for the next 2 weeks and then look for something to train for in the fall.  Unlike you, I don't have that race planned.

If I were you, I would take 3 days off and enjoy yourself.  After that, think about that full ironman and why you are doing it.  Talk to others and maybe find a training partner for some of it.

Good Luck,

Randy

You said you just raced a HIM a couple of weeks ago. It's pretty normal to have some post-event let down. Take a couple of days off, get some sleep, mix up your training a little (got a mountain bike?) and focus on your goal in 14 weeks.

Like everyone else said. Take a day or two kff. What your doing sounds. It might be your body saying it needs a little break. Also are you doing all these training run, swim, bike alone? See if you can get someone else out there, even if it is just for a few miles. Have someone ride a bike while you run to kep you company. I know most of the time I get burned out I'm tired of being out there for hours by myself. Hang in there though. It will pass.

Dude, I soooooo know where you are coming from. I had a HIM in march. I didn't train for about a week after that. Then when I started to train again, I didn't have the same motivation. As a result, it didn't take long for 14 hour training weeks to go down to 3 and 4 hour training weeks. I didn't get the motivtion back until about a week ago (read 3 months later). It took signing up for an Ironman to get my juices going, and even now I'm not as motivated as I was before the HIM. Sometimes life just gets in the way. I wish I had advice to give, but I really don't. Weather through it because I can tell you that taking the time off hurts you badly. I put a few pounds back on and went from 100's on the 1:35 to 100's on the 2:00 in the pool.

Also, your title says "Overtraining Burnout". I'm sure it's just burnout

If you are doing 75 min swims 6+ hour bikes and 3 hour runs then you are doing way too much too soon. Fitness is transient...it is physically impossible to hold a level of fitness for a long amount of time. If you continue at your current rate you are going to peak sometime oh about the middle of August and have a terrible IM. (I am assuming you are doing the GFT). I am doing the same race and I just started my IM specific training yesterday. If you have already done a Half this year then you have a good base and you need to seriously back off on the training. Like I said earlier fitness is transient you are either gaining fitness or losing it at any given time. Your training plan should time your peak to be the day of your A race. Chill out for awhile and start back slow..build some more base miles and then the first to middle part of August start working back to the 75 min swim 6+bike and 3 hour run...use September for your speed work and taper from the first of October until race day. Good Luck

Jerry,

Watch the 2005 IM Kona tape and see the heartbreak on the face of the single amputee who missed the bike cutoff by just minutes and the small bit they do on the guy who was hit by a motorcycle and finished the bike by carrying his bike.

That tape, more than any other, always gets me back out on the road.

It sounds like you need to sit on the couch and and eat some ice cream while watching the Tour, maybe get a massage, etc.  But really- when I start feeling burnt out I take it easy. Mentally it's hard to do but your muscles will love you for it!

Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

Yeah, I'm just going to chill out the rest of this week. no running, some swimming and some tui na massages. The batteries simply need a major re-boot and I want to make sure I do get to GFT in one piece. Those hills on the bike will definately present a challenge for this IM. It's going to be hard, and that's why we do it!
