I'm heading out to Benton Harbor next weekend to swim in Lake Michigan, as practice for Steelhead.  How do you know where it is safe to swim?  How can you determine which way the current is going, like they say they will do for the race?

If your going to Jean Kloch park where the race is they have a real nice beach area.  We swam from the beach area south towards the start area and back (can't miss it as it's a brekwater or something similar that juts out into the water) That's the normal starting point.  If the winds are coming out of a northerly or northwest direction it will most likey be pushing the current towards the south, or at least it did in 2008.  The day before was calm and beautiful and I didn't really feel a push from what I recall going north or south.  Either way it's a relatively safe area to swim as it doesn't get to deep.  I don't recall if there's swim area buoys or lifeguards.
