Set-Up Events
80F / 27C
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 32m 10s
Overall Rank = 77/77
Age Group = 25-29 F
Age Group Rank = 15/15
Pre-race routine:

Barely managed a half bowl of oatmeal, put on lots of sunblock and walked the dog. Stopped for coffee and a banana on the way to the race site.
Event warmup:

I don't ever warm up. Tried to poop.
Swim
  • 34m 41s
  • 1500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Felt pretty comfortable and smooth on the swim. All women were in the third wave, felt great to be coming up on the blue and red caps from the first two waves! Not used to waves or salty water, but I like swimming so I was fine.
What would you do differently?:

Have a wetsuit!!!
Transition 1
  • 02m 13s
Comments:

This time looks long, but I think that's mostly due to the long run from the beach to the transition area. This was a GREAT transition for me.

5/15 AG, 16/77 OA
What would you do differently?:

EAT SOMETHING. (this becomes important later)
Bike
  • 1h 14m 21s
  • 21 miles
  • 16.95 mile/hr
Comments:

Drank a whole bottle - a bottle per hour, right? I never do that! Really hammered the ride like I do with my Tuesday night group. Road was pretty trashed by the faster athletes.
What would you do differently?:

Not push so hard...and eat something. Although I feel great about this ride as just a bike ride, I would really pay for it later.
Transition 2
  • 02m
Comments:

Pretty quick T2 for me. First time with Yankz!!

12/15 AG, 50/77 OA
Run
  • 1h 38m 57s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 15m 56s  min/mile
Comments:

As soon as I stepped off the bike, I had severe cramping in my calves. That's weird, I thought. About 2 miles in the cramps had gone away in my calves, but instead were in my glutes. At this point I knew I was WAY under-nourished and needed calories badly. But there were none on course. Last year Setup provided Heed on the run but not here. As I came through the first loop I asked my boyfriend to walk with me, told him I wanted to just quit. Told him I couldn't finish. He encouraged me to do the short part of the figure 8. So I decided even if I walk the remainder of the "run," I would finish the darn race. I would earn it. It was TORTUROUS. So hot. Walking felt fine, but every time I tried to pick it up to a little jog, CRAMPS through every muscle group in my legs. I realized what I had done. I managed to jog in the last 0.2 miles, and there were a LOT of athletes cheering me on as I finished. I felt like hell, but put a huge smile on for the photographer anyway. I still felt accomplished.
What would you do differently?:

EAT MORE!!
Post race
Warm down:

Came through the finishing chute to nothing but water and pizza. Vomit. I needed calories, so I hugged a few friends that waited me out and took off for the 7-11 on the corner. Bought a gatorade and sat in the shade of a tree.

As of today (Mon Morning) I am STILL crampy and dehydrated.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Obviously, I did not eat nearly enough - both before the race started and on the course. And I hit the bike WAY too hard.

Event comments:

I raced Setup for my first Oly last fall and it was an amazing experience. I only finished 10 minutes faster! But because it was such a brutally hot day and I finished so late, there was NO nutrition left, and there was no Heed on the course - I was kind of counting on that (I KNOW HUGE MISTAKE) but I had it on Patriot's!!! Setup races are convenient but starting to be less and less appealing to me, not sure.

CRAZY competetive field. Not used to this with the RMS races, that's for sure!

Heed was availble at aide station two. At the end of the day, I poured half of it out. Sorry you did not get any.

Great job!  Awesome finish.  The best races I can remember are the ones I truly thought I wouldn't finish at some point during the race.

You mentally OWNED that race!

No volunteers offered it.  Every station I asked if there was anything with calories and everyone told me there was nothing but water.

Sounds like a tough day! Proud that you charged ahead and finished, despite all of the obstacles.
And Heed makes me nauseous! Still sucks they didn't have any when they were supposed to

Onward!

Sorry to hear about the troubles on the run.

Oly's definately require a lot more thought on pacing and fueling... but you pushed through it and finished.

Chalk it up as a good HTFU moment and something to plan around your next race.

Wow, way to push through a rough day!

Not having the Heed is kind of as bad as not having the portapotties up at Bumpass for the run course.

Congrats... you kept at it and finished...

many of us have been there and it really sucks though.. I usually think about punching all the people that say  "your looking great"   so just the fact that you didn't assualt anyone on the course or even mention thinking about it really good.

Thanks for posting and being honest. No shame in that race, only positives for the future.

Great job!

Thanks, everyone, for the encouragement.  It was hard to post this out there, but this IS beginner triathlete and I think that beginners that have bad races need to see that it's OK.  It was a great race up until that hot run and I WILL have my revenge next year.  Hoping to have a much lighter, funner, more typical "meh" RR for Tavern on Sunday!
