Pre-race routine:

Arrived back from my trip to Hong Kong and Singapore at 9:30 pm, got home at 11pm and went to bed by 12 and tried to sleep but didn't. Got out of bed by 4. Ate peanut butter toast, drank nuun and coffee. My friend Scott met me at my car at 5:30am. Got lost, my windshield got smashed by a flying piece of cement on the highway in Brooklyn got lost again (i'm also bad with directions).. Finally made it to the race site. Setup and was hungry again (dinner time in Asia). My body was completely confused. Not a good start to race day.. One bright spot, I saw my old boss that I haven't seen in 5 yrs in transition. He looked great, he must have lost at least 50lbs.
Event warmup:

Walked to the start of the swim and swam a few mins. Felt extremely tired.
Swim
  • 13m 25s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 03s / 100 yards
Comments:

I felt ok during the start of the swim but within the first 100 yds I just had to puke. I started to cough and it just came out. Started to swim and then I puked again while in mid stroke and swallowed some of it mixed with some nice salt water. Not pleasant at all. I thought about stopping because I wasn't sure if the puking was going to stop and I felt bad for the people behind me. I decided to give it a go one more time and if I puked again I would stop.. I got into a groove and was fine the rest of the way and actually enjoyed the rest of the swim. BTW, this was not only 440 yds, my time was around the same time i had in my last sprint and it was 880ish yds, the puking maybe delayed me a minute or two but not doubling my time. Per 100yds this is my worse time ever including my first open water swim/race and that was 880yds, that race I had a panic attack and swam 50% on my back. The elite's best time was 9:34 (he was also the overall winner) and usually that's their time for 880 as well. The word at the race was that the buoys weren't anchored properly and the swimmers were chasing them around. For anyone who swam in my puke, sorry!
What would you do differently?:

Not travel to Asia before a race.
Transition 1
  • 03m 22s
Comments:

Running out of the water I felt pretty good. I took a look at my time and couldn't believe it said 13 min and something.. Got to the bike I felt so dizzy. I couldn't focus. I tried to take of the wetsuit a few times and couldn't because I lost balance every time. I just knelt down and looked for my bag and found 2 gels and ate them and drank water. Felt much better, took off the suit and ran off with the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I'm not sure if the dizziness was due to the puking or something else.. Never felt that dizzy before. After sprint drills I usually feel a little light headed but nothing as bad as this.
Bike
  • 35m 37s
  • 12 miles
  • 20.22 mile/hr
Comments:

The course was flat but was in horrible condition. My aerobar extensions and water bottle cage came loose from all the vibration. It was non stop bumps with some major pot holes you really couldn't avoid. My arm came out of the rest a few times and I had to constantly re-adjust the aerobar extension, during the last lap I had some trouble shifting as well. I thought I might be dehydrated from the swim and tried to drink all my water. My legs felt a little crampy but overall ok, I didn't push it very hard. I thought my time was OK considering the condition of the roads. At the end of the race i noticed my right aerobar extension became 2 inches longer than the left.
What would you do differently?:

Not travel to Asia before a race
Transition 2
  • 01m 56s
Comments:

my legs cramped a little. I forced myself to drink more before the start of the run. Not sure why my time was so bad.
Run
  • 25m 35s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Not a good run. I felt like puking again and got cramps in my hamstrings. Tried to run out the cramping but they seized-up. Had to stop a few times to stretch and punch-out the cramps. The local high school manned the aid stations. They had a ton of fun throwing water on people, the water felt great.
What would you do differently?:

again not travel thousands of miles a day before a race.
Post race
Warm down:

Talked to my old boss. Drank some water. The hot topic at the finish line was the swim.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I thought I could handle the traveling before the race. Lack of sleep during the week and the traveling really threw my body for a loop.

Event comments:

this race has the potential to be a great race, it's fairly well run and the volunteers are pretty good. They need to figure out what happened during the swim and fix the road.

WOW, for a guy who got no sleep, was jet lagged, puked like a dozen times the outcome is really pretty amazing! Congrats.

PS I really feel for the people behind you....swimming in your neck of the woods is gross enough without the puke!

Great job though finishing.

At every section of your RR I was thinking, "things are going to get better for him," but they never did!  You are an animal. Personally, flying concrete would have been a sign for me to turn around and go back to bed, never mind the puking, floating buoys, dizziness, pot holes, cramps etc.  Please go take a very long and well deserved nap and eat a very good meal.

Way to stick it out!  I'm a wuss and probably would have folded up tents when I puked the first time!  Great job, especially given the jet lag you had to be feeling!

Dude, your crazy.  I'd have stayed in bed.  I remember coming back from Thailand and it took about a week to recover.  I'm impressed you showed up to the start line let alone finish it.  Good job pushing through.  Now go get some sleep

Wow...impressive race.  My body would have said no way before I got to the starting line.  Sorry to hear it was a puking/cramping fest.

You certainly got through a lot to finish this race!  Sounds like a long, hard day but you made it.

Congrats!

If I am ever swimming through puke (my own or someone elses) I will remember you!  Big time HTFU points for doing this race much less having a solid race completed.

Nice job!
I understand the swim. My last year's swim time was 9:15...faster than this year's 1st place...there MUST be a huge problem!
I had a hard time breathing and sighting...almost positive that I wasn't swimming thru chunks : ).
The roads were terrible...i was afraid to wreck my wheels. Doing bunny hops at 20 mph is not my idea of a good road.

Way to hang tough!  Puking (during the swim!), jet-lagged, rough road, and still rocked it.  You're one tough dude!

Wow awesome job given the jetlag, puking, cramps, and dizziness.  Major HTFU points, there's no way I could've pushed through all that!
