Overcast
Total Time = 1h 05m 21s
Overall Rank = 259/514
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 24/41
Pre-race routine:

Up at 4, small breakfast, got cleaned up and did a little yoga to loosen up. Loaded up the car and we were out the door @ 5:15.
Event warmup:

A little stretching, but this was my first tri, so I was a bit nervous and mostly wandering around making sure I had some idea where to go later.
Swim
  • 25m 20s
  • 879 yards
  • 02m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

Swim was abysmal. I had done one open water swim session in my training, and should have done more. I wasn't able to catch my breath the entire swim, and could only keep up my freestyle stroke for a short period before having to roll on my back and try to breathe. Just awful. Granted, I had never swam a proper stroke or complete lap of a pool before a couple months ago, but I thought I'd do better than this.
What would you do differently?:

More open water training.
Transition 1
  • 03m 10s
Comments:

I had practiced my transitions, and boy am I glad I did. Made for a much better experience, and definitely helped make up for my swim performance and got me back in the groove. I had run through both transitions dozens of times in my head as well, which made it all flow a lot smoother. This was my first tri, and I had the seventh fastest T1 in my age group.
What would you do differently?:

Practice makes perfect!
Bike
  • 19m 36s
  • 6 miles
  • 18.37 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than being pretty wasted by my swim, the bike went great. Again, practicing my mount and dismount with shoes attached made a world of difference. Also, I've had trouble in competition settings remembering to drink on the bike, so I made a mental note to drink during several specific points on the course so I couldn't forget. Worked well.
Transition 2
  • 01m 32s
Comments:

My feet were pretty gunked up from the run through the transition area, so I gave them a quick rinse before putting on my socks (I gotta for running) which made that harder. Otherwise, all good, could just be faster with more practice.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe wipe feet off on my towel instead of rinsing them - easier to get socks on and drier feet for the run.
Run
  • 15m 40s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

About three months ago, I hadn't run in years. Last year I had surgery to replace a torn ACL and didn't feel like I'd ever run again without a mugger or large jungle cat involved, to be honest. So I'm pretty thrilled to be competitive in the run AT ALL. The hill at the end is a real kick in the ass, but it's a short course, so it's pretty hard to complain. Great volunteers showing the way with all the myriad turns.
Post race
Warm down:

Was pretty fried at the end, so mostly just some walking around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Terrible swim performance, lack of muggers or large jungle cats on the run.

Event comments:

This is far and away the greatest triathlon I have ever participated in. Additionally, this is the first triathlon I have ever participated in. But pretty great nonetheless.

Congrats, triathlete!  You're right about that last hill on the run...wasn't expecting it, cuz it wasn't on the course map and it was a kick in the pants!  Good job...the swim will only get easier for you.

Great job! That's a great time for only having started a short while ago. The swim will get easier. Just remember to relax! I know the feeling how the waves can make getting complete breaths tough. You just have to be strong and remember your form and allow yourself to work with the ocean....don't fight against it.

Congrats on your first Tri. I did mine back in September of last year and I have been hooked ever since. I know what you mean about that last hill. I really felt it going up it myself. Your run time was awesome for someone who had ACL surgery, or for anyone for that matter.
