Sunny
Total Time = 6h 08m 15s
Overall Rank = /1560
Age Group = Clydesdales
Age Group Rank = 10/38
Pre-race routine:

changed somewhat. still drink coffee, but no more toast/PB. strictly gels and HEED
Event warmup:

none.
Swim
  • 49m 34s
  • 2112 yards
  • 02m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

swim start was tough. 30-34s went out with us and there was a lot of arms flying. drafted a little but guy was not sighting well. wound up swimming past him a little over half way.

Overall, I felt great and could've easily pushed a faster overall pace. Wanted to have gas in tank, but had too much.

started leg cramped after last turn. didn't effect hugely but did on bike
What would you do differently?:

practice sprint starts. and push pace earlier

get in water day before and sight.

kick more in pool to develop those muscles more for longer swims.
Transition 1
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

had a very good transition. have these dialed in pretty well. found bike quickly. cap goggles and ear plugs were out on the run to bike. threw on ground. on with shades, helmet, race belt, off. sprinted out of transition. shoes were tied up with plastic cord from trash bag use on seat. works very well for me

Rank 4/38
What would you do differently?:

FORGET SPRAY ON SUNSCREEN. bad.
Bike
  • 2h 54m 6s
  • 56 miles
  • 19.30 mile/hr
Comments:

pushed pace too hard and my quads paid price on run. had to learn this lesson. always wondering, now I know! you may save time on the bike over a properly paced, slower ride...but the run takes it back double.
What would you do differently?:

higher intensity training? longer bricks? I need to get better and still run.
Transition 2
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Rank 2/38

didnt' sight run exit well and cost some seconds, but overall was very good transition. again, need sunscreen
What would you do differently?:

take time to go over entry and exit. usually do, but was stuck in line for 50 minutes waiting for bathroom, and begged my way back into transition after it was closed to finish set up.
Run
  • 2h 20m 36s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 10m 44s  min/mile
Comments:

very hot, humid death shuffle. ranking 4th with 10:47 miles says it all. everyone suffered.

last year had a chamois to wipe sweat....this year sweat evaporated before it reached my eyebrows. brutal.

ran with fingers in ice cups pouring melt on head and back. also, dumped ice down pants on spent quads.

ate a gel late and disagree a little. blew up at mile 12, stopped to piss myself and had trouble starting running again. walked only at aid stations prior to that.
What would you do differently?:

pace bike correctly.
Post race
Warm down:

went to med tent to say hi to Ken Racine. decided to lay down and cool off.....MISTAKE. major cramps trying to get up. should've just stayed on my feet and walked awhile. not again.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

bike
