Running I assume? Sure, it's slower than some, but faster than many!

Slow and fast are relative terms. Some people will never be able to run one 8:13 mile... heck, some people will never be able to run one mile, regardless of the time! Some people can run a 5 minute mile, and some people can hold a 5 minute mile for 26.2 miles. Work on YOU !

Completely agree.  Don't think of it as "is 8:13 slow?", but think of it as "I can do an 8:13 right now".  With the right attitude, training, and coaching that's simply a number your starting off at now, it'll be irrelevant because you'll just get faster.... how much faster depends on you.

Fast enough for... what? A tri? To win a 5K? To....????

Fast is relative.

It's a good pace. You are young. With proper training, diet and coaching you can get faster.

Keep at it!

It's faster than me on a 5K, so if you were racing this 44 year old you would not be slow.

Fast enough for what?

My son is 12 and runs about 6:30 for a mile. During track season the fastest 12 year old boys were running around 4:50.

However, in PE class very few 12 year olds were running anything under 9 minutes for a mile.

If it takes you 8:13 to bike a mile...then yes...you are so slow it's not even funny.

If it takes you 8:13 to swim a mile...then heck no...you're faster than Michael Phelps.

If it takes you 8:13 to run a mile...see above

In a race, only one person is "fast enough", so don't think of it like that.  Think of it in terms of now and the.  Now, you are faster than some, slower than others.  It is a decent place to be if you are only 12!  Keep at it.  One day, you will be fast enough!

an 8:13 mile works out to 10.7 feet per second (3.26 meters/second for you metric types).

So it's fast enough to outrun a mosquite flying at 4.5 feet/second.

Not fast enough to evade a bull charging you at 29 feet/second.

Not quite fast enough to finish a 5K in less than 25 minutes, but plenty fast enough to finish and not be last.

Chuck Norris isn't fast.  The earth simply deforms under him to deliver him at his required pace.

The OP, for 12, is plenty fast.  Not to mention 12 is at that funny age when some kids have made the puberty jump and are getting faster by leaps and bounds and some haven't yet.  All this will even out in time.

Faster than me....

Seriously, alot of it depends on how you are made up.  When I was your age, I could beat 9 out of 10 others in a 40 yard sprint but could hardly finish a mile.

No..you're not fast enough...and for a runner an 8:13 is slow.  However, that doesn't matter.  I ran a 6:45 in third grade. 5:35 in 8th grade. and finally broke  5 with a 4:59.00 two weeks ago.  I was fast a 3rd grader but couldn't get past district  in high school.  You have plenty of time to get better.  Also, are you a good swimmer...and since your 12...do you bike?   doesn't matter how good you if you keep improving.

wow that's bold. tell some of these BT members who started running at +10 min/miles and now run in the 8:13 range that they aren't fast enough.

to the OP, as others have said its all relative. you're 12 so a lot is going to change for you. you will get much faster and probably won't see an 8:13 mile again for at least the next 15 years if you stay healthy and train hard. good luck to you.

Im a bold and confident guy...All I'm saying is that he is 12 and has plenty of time to improve...First big tris are the junior elite races with ages 16-19.  Hes got 4 years to progress.  Also it very differnt type of training when your 12 than when your a 45 mop person.  12 yr old havent trained year after year to drop 15 secs off their mile time.  when your young you just get faster.

I think you should have stopped there and you would have been fine.  This site is full of 8:13+ runners, and 45 (I assume you meant 45 year olds) MOPers.

Just sayin...

As others said "relative to what?".  My 12 yr old son ran a low 7:00 mm at the doggy dash, probably would have beat 7 if the leash hadn't come off the dog and had to stop to put it back on (btw the dog was the faster runner, if I could teach it to ride a bike I think I may have a Kona qualifier!).  Now ask him to run 3 miles and he probably would be in the 10mm.  Train smart and you will get much faster, don't sweat the details at 12.

Holy S!  Did I read this right.  You run a sub 5 min MILE?  Can you keep that pace up for more than a mile? For how long?  (honest questions)  Thats almost full out sprinting for me...That's insanity!

OP- Im striving to break 9 minute miles.  I bike well, and I swim well, but others are much better.  Some (not many) are much slower.  I may not break 9 minute miles often, but I run the whole way.  Just keep at it.  Train, compete, evaluate, adjust, repeat.  You have plenty of time.  If you start now, and stick to it, you are already better off than a lot of BT'ers, like me, who got into tri's once they realized they were a little too far gone health wise to be comfortable.  It's a long road back.

And for what it is worth, the guy who runs a sub 5 is the wrong guy to ask if you are fast enough.  Some day, you will be that guy, if you work harder than he does.   Get after it.

I believe the 50th percentile for 12 year old boys is about 8:40 on the Presidential Fitness Test. So 8:12 is above average for all boys.

Le sigh.

He's 12. Go easy on him. He's out running and not sitting on his butt playing video games - he's ahead of a lot of overweight/ obese tweens/ teens right now.

What you ran in third grade, and 8th grade, and since that has no relevance to him (or really to you or anyone else right now).

And saying "8:13 is slow" isn't.. well, isn't correct. 8:13 isn't slow compared to whom? At what distance?

Children need to be encouraged, not told they're slow.

I have a feeling you aren't much older than a teenager yourself.
