Pre-race routine:

My husband and three of my sons loaded into the car and off we were. We found a place to get a bagel and some water on the way. When we pulled into the parking area, I was in awe of all the bikes, gear, and triathletes we saw. Found my way to registration. The people helping were very friendly and all directions were very clear. SO organized! I was glad there was a bike shop station there--the man pumped up my tires a bit and checked out my bike. Got transition area all set up--I felt pretty prepared there, having researched how to set up my gear.
Event warmup:

Just jogged around a bit, stretched and loosened up. Felt the water for temperature. Felt good to go, nervous and excited.
Swim
  • 14m 33s
  • 440 yards
  • 03m 19s / 100 yards
Comments:

Truly awful. Goggles wouldn't seal, which led to panic. They never did seal and I just couldn't put my face in the water. Swam almost the whole race backstroke.
What would you do differently?:

Get better goggles and be sure they work. Swim 2 times/week in open water to force myself to get used to putting my face in murky water.
Transition 1
  • 01m 25s
Comments:

Fairly good transition. Need to hustle a little more into and out of transition area. Went sockless and glad I did.
What would you do differently?:

Forgot to take GU with me, but will remember next time.
Bike
  • 36m 54s
  • 10 miles
  • 16.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Not bad, overall, but I was surprised to see people passing me when I felt I was moving along pretty fast. Turns out my time was faster than my practice runs, but still not fast enough to be competitive.
What would you do differently?:

Clipless pedals? Maybe next year.
Transition 2
  • 01m 8s
Comments:

Since the race belt I had ordered did not arrive for the race, I had used safety pins to attach the number to my shirt. As I was heading out of the transition area, the number tore off two of the pins, so I had to repin it. Lost about 20 seconds there. Other than that, it was ok.
What would you do differently?:

Race belt
Run
  • 15m 7s
  • 2 miles
  • 07m 34s  min/mile
Comments:

The run was by far the easiest portion for me. I had decided ahead of time that this would be the time to turn it on. Worked through the brick-like feeling of the transition from bike to run, and thought to myself, "Suck it up, buttercup" like someone told me to. :D
Passed quite a few people and had a nice feeling of accomplishment!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Had some powerade, water, granola bar. Walked around and was hugged quite a bit by my family. It was so great to have them there--I can't even describe how encouraging it was.

Event comments:

Excellent race-day organization!

Great job!

Just think of all the spit and snot and other ick that's in your pool you swim laps in, and the mud of a pond won't be so bad next time.
