Overall Rank = 336/398
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 27/33
Pre-race routine:

Up at 3am,...Had a pb&j sammich and cup of chai tea and a gatorade..loaded the car with stuff that wasn't already in there. Out the door by 3:30..was at race site a little after 5..picked up race packet, body marked..yadda yadda.
Event warmup:

Caught up with Mavy and we found Kathy and her family..talked with them a little bit and then went and set our stuff up. At this point lost Marianne because I had to go pottie as they were trying to clear the transition area. We were in the last 2 waves so figured I'd find her at some point, or not. Wandered around looking for her, but without my glasses I must have looked like a lost puppy. A woman comes up to me and says "don't worry you'll be fine"..just thought to myself really not nervous at all, but thanks!
Swim
  • 43m 31s
  • 2500 yards
  • 01m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

WTF?!?!?! 43:31 for 1.2 miles I swear I did not stop, soap up and take a bath!!..Yeah, I read on Kelly's log that the course was long..1.4miles. Guess they were making up for the shortish course last year!!

Anywho I just planned on swimming an even steady pace not push it, stay out of the mix. I had very little contact with anyone except for the few random chicks in my wave that sucked on siting. I came in at the middle of the pack in my age group. So ok with that!

What would you do differently?:

nada it was fine..nice swim, was thinking as I was getting out of the water that I would rather do that for 6ish more hours than bike and run!!
Transition 1
  • 04m 10s
Comments:

Picnic at site 314 come join me!!..I don't care how long I take in transition in a half..doesn't make a lick of difference.. so I took my time!
What would you do differently?:

nothing.. like I said, I don't care!!
Bike
  • 3h 25m 14s
  • 58 miles
  • 16.96 mile/hr
Comments:

I love this course!!! ..It was VERY windy in parts...headwind, crosswind, gusts (of course no tail wind). Was thinking anyone with fancy wheels might be having a problem!

The only bad part, aside from the condition of the roads in alot of areas,is that at one intersection I was forced to sit at a traffic light two times while the cops were controling traffic so my ride was actually about 4-5minutes faster than it appears. The cop told me..'you people need to play your games somewhere else!" Jerk, I didn't make the bike route.

My plan was to try hard on the first loop and go easy on the 2nd. I had hopes of an average over 16mph for the 58miles..mission accomplished!!
Very happy with that!

Nutrition wise (caused a run fail) drank had 1 gu, 3bottles of Heed, Power Bar half way thru and then 1gu a mile or two, outside of T2..NOTE TO SELF: THIS DOES NOT WORK FOR YOUx2 try something else!!!!

Geeez...only about 90 people, and 10 of the 33 people in my age group passed me on the bike between T1 and the end of the ride!! I suck.

What would you do differently?:

nothing I suck at biking so it is, what it is.
Transition 2
  • 05m 16s
Comments:

Came into the transition area to a sea of bikes and yelled WHAT!?! everyone left without me!!! Had one old dude cracking up. Sucks to be in the old lady division and the lastish wave..they should still rethink that and put the slow people in an earlier waves..I know we might get swum over but it might make your race event shorter!!

Picnic part two!!
What would you do differently?:

nada
Run
  • 2h 38m 31s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 12m 06s  min/mile
Comments:

FAIL.

I was ok (not great, but ok) until a little before mile 2 when my quads started to freeze up..I did NOT drink enough on the bike and the power bar was sitting in my stomach still.

Anyway I pull into the banquet at mile 2 and got REALLY dizzy. I took an enduralyte cap..water and a handful of pretzels and SAT down in some old ladies chair for about 10min until I felt a little better. Once it seemed ok I got up and started trotting off, only for it to happen again about half a mile later..People that were passing me were SO NICE..I was sqatted down and it probably looked like I was going to barf..but I was just really dizzy again and was also trying to stretch my quads out. Some nice girl gave me a swig of her salt h2o and another gave me an enduralyte cap..after a few minutes I felt better. Started walking and then trotting a little bit. Was thinking this is going to be a VERY long 13.1miles!!

Anyway I walked/trotted to the banquet tables up until mile 5..ate lots of pretzels, water and had a enduralyte cap at each one..I really have no idea if you can OD on those babies but it seemed to be working. By mile 5 I was feeling a little better, and was able to run under 10s for a good portion of each mile until the end..there was some walking and my stomach felt like shit but at least I did some running.

The only good thing about this run I can pick out is I came out of the bike in 330 place and finished the run at 329..so a good magority of the people that passed me while I was down..I caught up and passed them back later on...
What would you do differently?:

fix the bike nutrition plan!!
Post race
Warm down:

sat in a chair and Marianne took care of me..and some other poor lady that came in a little while behind me that I had walked with for a little bit at banquet 11

What limited your ability to perform faster:

heat bad plan..Im going to go with my mental and physical effort were the best I could do..I got through the problems and did the best I could do..NOT A QUITER!

Event comments:

They made alot of improvements this year...I came in at almost 7 hours and there were still lots of people hanging around at the end cheering people on. The volunteers were hands down AWESOME!!! Saw Kathy's girls a few times!

Gutsy performance. It was brutal out there. I did my share of walking too. Nice job. Wish I would have seen you. You are not a quitter. Cool and you can carry that swagger into IMAZ. Good luck in your training. The course kicked your arse but you kicked harder.

Nice job finishing with that tough run.  A 17mph average for over 50 miles doesn't suck.  Great job on the race report...Always entertaining

Hey, I think we talked at the mile 2 rest stop.  Was it around the mile 2 rest stop where you felt like you were going to pass out? I asked if you were okay and if you needed a Gu. If you're the same person it didn't look like you were having a great day.

The run ended up being a lot warmer than I'd anticipated.

Nice race report! Congrats on finishing up after a tough run.
