Total Time = 1h 18m 49s
Overall Rank = 107/734
Age Group = 35-39
Age Group Rank = 17/85
Pre-race routine:

Had a whole wheat bagel with peanut butter and some gatorade as I drove over to the race. Set up my transition and walked around a bit.
Event warmup:

Swam a bit to get used to the water and cool off because it was hot.
Swim
  • 16m 40s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 53s / 100 yards
Comments:

I was in the second to lastwave and notice the current pushing evryone to the left. So I started to the right and hit the first bouy dead on and rounded it with ease. Made it to the second bouy and turned in. This is where I went off course a bit and ended up off to the right of the exit. I believe this cost me some time because I felt good on the swim and thought my time might be better.
What would you do differently?:

Sight better on the way in. I felt strong the entire swim and never felt like I was struggling.
Transition 1
  • 01m 11s
Comments:

Went with the shoes clipped in. 38th overall. 1st in my AG.
What would you do differently?:

I need to pratice getting into my shoes some more.
Bike
  • 39m 46s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.11 mile/hr
Comments:

Pushed hard on the bike, I know my fitness is not there since I haven't really been riding as much as I should. I was pushing over 20 mph on all the flat sections. The course was very crowded since I was in a later wave and there is also a Duathlon that goes on during the tri.
What would you do differently?:

Ride more!!!
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Flying dismount an into T2
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. 74th overall. 3rd in my AG.
Run
  • 20m 18s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Came out of transition and I knew I had to put it in high gear. Someone from my age group passed me about a half mile into the run. I kept right on his shoulder the whole way. I felt strong the entire run with about a half mile left I passed him and headed into the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Had some water and a few bannanas and drove home to see the family.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of focus on riding my bike during training.

Event comments:

This is the 4th year I have done this race. They updated the run course which was much better than the past three years. I just did this to get another race in. I know if I work hard on the bike I can compete for an AG slot. This is a great race for first timers.

Nice Job Ralph.  That Bike course is crowded!! And the industrial park that we ride through with the huge potholes never thrilled me.  Glad to see they finally made it a real run course.  The prior run course was a joke and way short of the advertised distance.

If you ever train the Bike you will definitely be within striking distance of the top AG spots.  If you ever train the bike, You can become a Contender!!
