Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 55s
Overall Rank = 83/212
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 7/18
Pre-race routine:

A nice drive to Topeka through some pretty country. The clocks in Lawrence all said 80! I was ready for a hot one! I was very surprised when the announcement was made that the race would be wetsuit legal, I said what the heck, I bought it, I may as well use it. I kept pouring powerbar endurance (drink) down my neck because I knew that the sweat loss was going to be a factor. Walked around the race area to familiarize myself with transitions and where the run and bike left from.
Event warmup:

Walked, stretched, jogged stretched, swam a quick 100 then headed to the start.
Swim
  • 12m 38s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good first open water swim in competition. I really enjoyed it. Next time I will get after it a little bit more, but I had a good swim.
What would you do differently?:

Push it a little bit more, but not too much.
Transition 1
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

I just removed all of the swimming paraphernalia, put on socks and shoes put on the helmet and shades and ran out of the transition area then jumped on! I felt pretty good.
What would you do differently?:

I could have gotten out of the swim gear a little quicker, I will practice this one.
Bike
  • 34m 33s
  • 10.8 miles
  • 18.76 mile/hr
Comments:

I am just not fast on the bike! I need to work on it. The course was not ridiculous, it was just not a well tuned engine! I will get after it.
What would you do differently?:

Train like a cyclist.
Transition 2
  • 01m 36s
Comments:

Good transition. I had done this transition before so I felt good. I need to figure out how to get my shoes off before I get off of the bike.
What would you do differently?:

Learn how to get out of my shoes while on the bike.
Run
  • 28m 9s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 05s  min/mile
Comments:

A good run, I just could not push any faster. I gave it all I had, and I guess 9:05 pace is all I had.
What would you do differently?:

Train like a runner
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and put whatever I could find that was liquid in my body. I ate a brat and headed back to the house.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing really, just training a little harder and smarter. I guess the IT band issue in late May and the lost couple of weeks of running could have hampered my ability to push the run a little faster. All in all, my second triathlon and I finished about 5 minutes and 5 places off of the podium, I am fired up about that! I can get those 5 minutes in a years time, but I might not be a clyde. I don't really care about that, just getting fit, and I am more fit now than I have been in the last 12 years. That is what this is all about.

Event comments:

A good race. I personally could have used a drink station on the run every quarter mile instead of one, but that is just me. A great company and a great race.

Course: Rectangle with buoys on the right, very well defined and explained, but not very well measured. Some had the course at up to 700Y! I wish it were more correct because this is my 'baseline' open water swim, now I will have to see what happens at the next swim to see how slow I really am! I was third out of the water for my group.

Great Race Dave!!  18 MPH on the Bike doesn't seem slow to me, and you still killed the run.   Nicely done.

Looks like a great race Dave.  I'm with Charlie, that bike doesn't look bad at all, and to follow it up with a pretty strong run is great.  At 700 yds the swim looks excellent as well.  And what's with the 30 second T1!!!!  That's pro-level!  I think we all need some lessons.

Nice Race! I'm with the rest of them - your speed on the bike is nothing to sneeze at! And 30 seconds including taking the wetsuit off - that's smokin' fast. Great job.
