Staying with a local family is a great idea - I have had friends do that and they said that was the best part of your experience.

Take a solid look at your current budget. Look at how often you go out to eat and see if you can cut that back. (I've recently had to do this calculation because I am in that lousy time period between having graduated from law school and actually being licensed to practice law). I've freed up over 200 a month that way alone.

Paypal is a great idea. Make a Facebook page. This is not the time for you to be shy!

You might be able to host a party at a bar. Get a package set up with a local bar - 30 bucks all you can drink domestic blah blah but charge 40 bucks for the braclet. Make 10 bucks a head.....

Send out the invites to all the local tri clubs. See if your bike shop will donate a few items to raffle off...

I concur!  I recommend checking out couchsurfing.org.  It's not for everybody as it might not be in everyone's comfort zone, but it's a way you can find someone to stay with locally.  The number one thing it's for is cultural exchange, as it allows you to stay with people and meet people in an area (and perhaps culture) that you are not familiar with.  It's how I spent a month traveling in Europe and didn't pay a cent for accommodation!

There are many available "couches" in the US too if you want to try it out here.  Also if you live near a relatively populated area, maybe you can first meet someone in your area who may be interested in telling you how great this concept is.  In the bigger cities there is usually a good size couchsurfing community where meetups are held regularly.

I've stayed with many people in many different countries, and I've also hosted people from many different countries, so if you have any questions, feel free to PM me!  People are very awesome on CS (couchsurfing), much like they are on BT.

Why not think big?  I propose you go to the largest corporation with headquarters in or near Davenport.  Pitch that you are hoping to get full sponsorship including registration, trip essentials & transportation costs--have this figure ready.  In exchange, you will obviously advertise their logo.  BUT, given how popular this sport is for us BOP/MOP folks, offer to lead clinics and training rides for their employees.  You can use these rides for recovery, so they are still worth your time.  Who knows, if you get a good following, they might want to continue the rides as a corporate training opportunity... and, maybe they'll pay you for this going forward.  THEN, go to owner of the bike shop where you work and pitch that your training rides will bring in new business.  Maybe they'll throw a few sponsorship dollars your way.  How's that sound?

The golden rule of fundraising is "Just Ask". Some ideas:

  1. To raise funds for Team Diabetes Canada I made up a brochure, sent it to everyone I knew (300+ requests) and received 200+ donations totalling over $10,000.
  2. Host a simple dinner/party for __ at a price of __ per person
  3. Organize a 5k fun run or a group ride with a nominal entry fee
  4. Raffle a prize basket
  5. Organize a fundraiser concert/dance
  6. Garage sales, car washes, BBQ's

Good luck!

Do you have any local service organizations (Lions Club, Rotary etc...)?
They may be able to help out with an exchange ( ie a place to stay) as well...
Local Chamber of Commerce / Tourism, as you would be promoting your local economy...

Anyways, Good Luck!!!

Congrats, but its not that hard to qualify so I wouldn't view it as a once in a lifetime opportunity.  If you can't swing the cash, there will be other opportunities.  Good luck.

Really????  I'm not sure who should be more offended by this post.  Dan, who worked hard to get ready and have a good race or those of us who aren't fast enough to qualify.  When did we change the name of this site to "Best Amatuer Triathlete.com"?
Good grief.

For sure- relax buddy.
Some people are faster than others- encourage him.
I would guess by your post you probably aren't the best in public settings; there is no need to knock someone down.

Offended???  Really???  Truly offended???  Give me a break.  I started off by congratulating the guy and then go on to essentially say that he qualified once and can easily qualify again so I don't view it as a once in a lifetime opportunity...sounds like a compliment, not a knock-down to me... you're entitled to your own opinion.

Let me see if I have this right.....you'd guess by my post that I'm not the best in public settings????  Really...you ascertained all of that from my post?????  Dude, you just demonstrated that you don't know squat about me or my contribution to this site.  How many seasons have you volunteered to be a mentor in the BT mentor program designed to ENCOURAGE NEW TRIATHLETES???? I did it for 2 seasons.  How many training camps did you voluntarily organize for beginner triathletes on BT that are doing their first IM WI?????   I did one and helped produce a video for BT on said camp.

"Best Amateur Triathlete.com"????  "Good grief"?????  wtf????  Where the heck does that come from???  I think you guys are the ones that need to relax.  Have a great season.

Whatever you wind up doing don't pay for the trip on plastic, it's not worth putting yourself in debt for the race. It will feel more rewarding to be at the start line knowing that you don't have debt from the trip hanging over your head. But that's my opinion.

Congrats Dan - you've come a long way from your crash last year.

I'm in for $10.

Thanks Lisa!  I will admit that it was great to come back to the QC Tri this year and have a great day.  I didn't, however, go out for a recovery ride the next day...call me superstitious.  I've now passed 1 year of keeping my bones inside my body!

On another note, how do I advertise/set up a paypal acct to collect money?

My advice is to look into going on your own, without the travel folks that USAT offer. You can find cheaper ways to go, just try and find a hotel close to where the team hotel is, that's where most of the activity will be, mechanics, dinner and such.

Try your hardest to go, it's a great experience and congratulations!!

Which reminds me....I'm headed to Scotland this year to race, you kids gonna send me money, too??

For most things I would agree.  But if its *truly* once in a lifetime, then its definitely worth it.  For me, it wouldn't be.  If it is for the O.P. I don't see charging it as a bad thing.  If I qualified for Kona, and the only way I could go was to be in credit card debt, I'd happily do it.  AND I wouldn't feel bad about it one bit.

YAAAAAY DAN! (Okay, can I stop congratulating you when I get to the 10th time or so? )

Hostels are cheap. If you buy a plane ticket far in advance, it's cheap. Try travelzoo.com for different sites, and plug in a bunch of different stuff to fare compare.

Check out Rick Steves's Budapest. I stayed in Florence for pretty much nothing at a ... well ... monastery.

And yes. Ask ask ask for money. Shamelessly. Ask people who hate you (wait, that's nobody). Ask EVERYBODY.

Oh yeah, make up a little business card (you can get 'em for free if you pay for a bit o' shipping) with contribution details. Give them to EVERYONE (like little old lady in line at grocery store). Talk, talk, talk. See if a local gym will sponsor you.

PANHANDLE. (I'm not kidding. Set up a big sign somewhere legal, public ... you might be surprised).

Try EVERYTHING. Each "no" or thing that doesn't pull in a lot of bucks, is just a step toward all the yesses.
