Total Time = 1h 58m
Overall Rank = 839/1139
Age Group = M 35-39
Age Group Rank = 84/111
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 2:00 to get into DC before the roads closed. Ate a banana. Didnt eat much since I was still somewhat full from dinner the night before.
Event warmup:

None. Wait for swim waves to start.
Swim
  • 15m 20s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Uggh no wetsuits. I could have worn one and competed unofficially but decided I had pampered myself with a wetsuit for too long and I needed to suck it up and swim without one. Swam well, but the legs werent used to kicking for that long. NO cramps though. Went better that I thought. Sighted well, swam well. The course buoys were AWESOME. They were easily 12ft cubes with the distance printed on them in 2ft tall lettering! The swim started late so they decided to only give 3 minutes in between waves. Ended up coming across wall after wall of breaststokers from previous waves. That sucked. There was also a ton of diesel in the water. Got abit nauseous from the taste and smell of diesel.
What would you do differently?:

Just train more without the pull buoys and wetsuits.
Transition 1
  • 05m 39s
Comments:

Took a bit to get rid of the diesel haze that I was in, but managed to get out on the bike course fairly quickly. Downed a Red Bull shot and left.

Wow, felt really bad for people who popped their tires going over the curb from T1. I was in the 4th swim wave and by the time I got out of T1, there were already 6 or so people fixing flats near the sharp curbs.

What would you do differently?:

Not much I could do about the dizziness unless they let me wear a scuba tank next time. Still need to get better at running out of the water to T1.
Bike
  • 42m 57s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 17.36 mile/hr
Comments:

The bike was a breeze. I even managed to pass a bunch of people! If it werent for the dizziness from the swim, I couldve gone much faster as my legs were still fresh coming in on the bike. Still, no excuses. A good bike for me. Highest avg speed to date!
What would you do differently?:

Ride faster. As of right now, I know my run is going to suck, so I might as well spend the energy on the bike where Im slightly better.
Transition 2
  • 03m 33s
Comments:

Again, good transition for me, but I still need to work on it so its good compared to others.
What would you do differently?:

Practice transitions.
Run
  • 50m 33s
  • 4.16 miles
  • 12m 09s  min/mile
Comments:

My pace was faster than I expected. Felt much slower on course. My run is still horrible. Starting to think I need a coach if my times dont pick up by the end of the season.
What would you do differently?:

Try to figure out how to run faster. I know that principle is easy, just need to figure it out.
Post race
Warm down:

Got my finishers medal, met up with my wife (who got some awesome race pics) and hung around the post-race festival for a while. Tried out the POM recovery smoothie which was actually pretty good.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of training. Really slacked off with my training after the Columbia Tri.

Event comments:

A good race for me but again I finding places where I could easily knock off ten or so minutes from my time at my current fitness level. I suppose thats all part of the learning curve of a first year triathlete though.
