Subject: realistic?
Hi

was just wondering if u guys could give me some realistic advice. I have got a late place for a sprint tri on sat. Will have to swim 400m. The bike and run leg will be no problem BUT i havent swam for ages and its only been breaststroke, which i can do with ease but not front crawl. I done on open water session today and had some coaching but can only make 50m before having to stop coz my technique goes out the window and im really out of breath. Now is it unrealistic to do this tri or do i give it a go??
Help coz im at a loss at what to do

Thanks

Kelly

Realistically, if it is an OWS it is not going to be a fun experience when you can not even do 50m without resting (and that's all breaststroke.) I hope you at least have a wetsuit. Personally, I wouldn't do it, there are lots of other sprints.

I just have one question - Since you can only swim 10% of the distance necessary, do you think competing would put you, the other competitors or the volunteers in any danger?

If the answer is yes, don't compete. There are always other triathlons later. When you've practiced.

If you can only breast stroke 50m, please do not go out there and put yourself at risk. Think of it this way: "Gee, I couldn't quite finish a 5k yesterday, do you think I should run a marathon on Saturday? By the way, instead of just waking, the penalty for not continuing to run is drowning."

Can you side-stroke 400m?

If so, go for it.  If you get out of breath, switch to sidestroke, and then go back to crawl or breast.

I had a similar decison last year and decided to do the tri.  It was a bad decision, as stated above due to a risk to myself and others.  Unless, I can get in significant swim training; I will not participate in anything longer than a super sprint.  For this reason, I have been mainly doing duathlons.

Just my opinion: if you can only swim 50m (12.5% of the distance) without getting out of breath, doing an OWS tri is a very bad idea. Pool swim-go for it, Open Water- I'd seriously rethink entering and consider volunteering.

If you cannot COMFORTABLY swim MORE than the distance required in the race (and by swim, I mean crawl...not resort to backstroke or side stroke or doggy paddle), then don't do the race. Period.

It's dangerous to you and those around you (including the high school aged guards who'd have to come after you to save you), and a huge drain on the RD.

There are enough things to worry about in the water with trained swimmers (heart attacks, blows to the head, asthma, stroke, etc etc etc). Don't compound the situation by going in when you don't know what you're doing.

Once upon a time, I couldn't crawl for sh*t.  I resorted to lots of side stroke, even in ocean swims.  I was clearly back of the pack for the swim, but made the cutoffs.

What exactly is dangerous about sucking at swimming and being forced to use backstroke or side stroke to complete a swim?!?

From my perspective if one can get through the swim with some combination of crawl, side stroke, backstroke, etc. then they're fine.  One doesn't need to do well in the swim, just make the cutoffs.

I cannot disagree more.  The OP said they can only swim about 50 before they have to stop.

I know we all try to encourage each other around here, but we should be encouraging them to work hard and develop the necessary skills to complete triathlons with confidence, not just jump into a race when they say they are only able to do a little over 10% of the race distance.  This endangers them, others in the race, and potentially the lifeguards who are there to protect everyone.

There will be other tri's . Maybe you can change to a relay team for this weekend and find a swimmer? No you shouldn't do the swim portion of this tri.
