Pre-race routine:

This was a 6pm race which made things interesting. I ate probably too much all day and just enjoyed my day off. I got caught in traffic the entire way and I was already running late do to packing very slow. I stopped eating food around 3pm. I had 1 Orange GU 30mins before the start and sipped a little water.
Event warmup:

Not much warmup. I stood around the swim start with TJ and just stretched everything out.
Swim
  • 18m 31s
  • 880 yards
  • 02m 06s / 100 yards
Comments:

Water was warm so no wetsuits. I started in the front of wave 2 just to see what would happen. People started passing me but I tried to go hard. I eventually found TJ swimming just in front of my so I tried to stay on his feet. I lost him and started going off course. It felt like I was going hard and I had to breath more frequently. I went off course constantly.
What would you do differently?:

Stay on course more. Swim more leading up to the race. Learn how to draft.
Transition 1
  • 00m 47s
Comments:

Fast transition. I felt heavy coming out of the water but I kept speeding up. I threw on my helmet and sunglasses and ran with my bike. Mounting went well.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 35m 23s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 21.03 mile/hr
Comments:

Course had some rollers. I immediately got up to around 200watts and held that. I passed many people and only got passed once. It was hot so I started pounding water which was probably a bad idea. I hunted people down and raced hard. That's probably why my run was slow.
What would you do differently?:

Bike more. I raced hard. I am proud of my bike split but it might have hindered my run.
Transition 2
  • 00m 41s
Comments:

Super fast transition. Everything went smooth.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 34s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 07m 36s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt slow right from the start. The long hill at the beginning was very difficult. It took me until mile 2 to finally get my legs. I wasn't happy because I knew I was running slow. I could also feel some GI issue trying to crop up. I was really hoping for a sub 20. Guess not. I crushed the last mile though which crushed my stomach.
What would you do differently?:

Drink less on the bike. Bike more. Run speedwork?
Post race
Warm down:

TJ wanted to do a cooldown run so I humored him. We ran too hard for too long. All I wanted to do was sit down and let my stomach cool down.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training in the few weeks leading up to the race. Life got in the way too many times.

Event comments:

RunningFit puts on awesome races! Plenty of volunteers and enthusiastic people to make for a great environment. I'm excited for the rest of the series.
