North Muskegon, Michigan
United States
75F / 24C
Sunny
Total Time = 1h 15m 35s
Overall Rank = 25/127
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 3/13
Pre-race routine:

Early AM, smoothie, coffee, pack, Facebook & GO! At transition opening.
Event warmup:

I brought my road bike and TT bike, so I could rack the TT and warm up on the road bike. 5' bike wu, 4' run wu, swim wu just before the starting gun.
Swim
  • 15m 37s
  • 820 yards
  • 01m 54s / 100 yards
Comments:

The swim went well. I started outside to the left and stayed out of traffic. I didn't look to draft. I felt confident the whole way.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing? Maybe push a bit more in the middle stretch, but I'm happy with the swim. The time includes the run up the hill back to transition. Actual time in the water was 13:41.
Transition 1
  • 01m 6s
Comments:

5/13. Took off the wetsuit at the edge of the lake. This works so well that I'll continue to do it.
What would you do differently?:

It easy to say I'd run up the hill now, but it didn't seem possible or worthwhile at the time.
Bike
  • 34m 3s
  • 12.43 miles
  • 21.90 mile/hr
Comments:

The HR data suggests I rode hard, and it felt good and hard at the time. I'm happy with the speed and the result.
What would you do differently?:

The only thing that makes me think I could have gone faster is the lack of utter soreness in my legs on Monday. My slow first mile running suggests I pushed just fine.
Transition 2
  • 00m 50s
Comments:

3/13. My transitions are getting solid.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run
  • 23m 57s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 42s  min/mile
Comments:

The first mile was 8:06, and I definitely picked it up after that. I'm trying to push into the pain cave more, and I felt questionable the last mile. I was able to hold off some footsteps back there for the last half mile through the finish line.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace in mile 1.
Post race
Warm down:

No stretching, just a lot of waking around and hanging out with the team. I did job a bit to transition before taking a quick dip in the lake.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The wet roads lead to slower cornering. I'm pretty happy with all aspects of the race.

Event comments:

The only reason it wasn't on time was that thunder and lightning delayed things one hour. They also condensed the Olympic distance into the Sprint. This is a great race. It's small, friendly, fun, and flat.

Course: The first part in town had many turns, but it opened up into long, flat stretches of woodsy road. There was a nice 4-5 mile out & back portion in the middle, which allwed us to see the race ahead and behind. I didn't bomb into the turns as usual due to the wet conditions.
