Total Time = 2h 41m 27s
Overall Rank = 541/1820
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 40/158
Event warmup:

Short jog up the drive on the trail along the river. Watched two police boats searching the river.
Run
  • 27m 20s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 08m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

Was supposed to start in the second to last wave, but missed it. Not sure what happened, but there were a couple of us "black caps" standing around looking very surprised when they called for the last wave. I ended up in the last wave with the Clydes. It seemed like half the field was already out on the first bike loop before we started. It was already hot & humid so I settled into an easy pace so I wouldn't get cooked on the first run. It turned out to be way too easy (slow).
What would you do differently?:

Should have run faster; way too conservative. Around 25:00 would have been better.

Bike
  • 1h 15m 10s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 19.84 mile/hr
Comments:

Comfortably hard pace. Stayed on plan and rode a little easier than other years; about 3 minutes slower - actually pretty enjoyable. The heat didn't bother me at all during the bike thanks to the easy 5k.
What would you do differently?:

I probably should have pushed harder on the bike, but I probably would have suffered like a dog on the 10k if I had.
Transition 2
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Shoes fell off pedals while running with bike.
What would you do differently?:

Not sure if there's much of an advantage to leaving the shoes clipped to the pedals for the run through this transition area. It's long and bumpy, and with some people walking their bikes you really can't run that fast anyway. Next year I think I'll just run in my bike shoes.
Run
  • 54m 53s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 08m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

Hot run - a lot of people walking. I was surprised that I still felt pretty good. I took two waters at most stations; drank one and poured the other over my head. Seemed to work pretty well.
Post race
Event comments:

Not too bad overall. Time was slower than other years, even a couple minutes slower than 2006 when it was also a du, but it was more enjoyable, even with the heat.

Great job staying within yourself on the bike to account for the heat on the 10K. It was a hot day out there.

I'm incredibly impressed that you paced yourself well enough to not have completely suffered on the 10k.  You're a much wiser racer than I am!
