Subject: Power Tap ?

I have been going back and forth on whether I want to get race wheels or a power meter.  I am leaning towards getting the power meter.  My question is, if I put a power tap on my training wheels and I decided to rent race wheels with a power tap.  Will the power hub in the rented race wheels work with the computer that came with the power tap in my training wheels.

Yes...you'll just need to re-aquire the PT signal.

I will say this...if you can afford the garmin 500 as your computer...get it.  IT'S EFFIN AWESOME.

I got mine for $200 from nashbar.com when they had their 20% off everything sale.  So it was only $20 more than the PT electronic package that includes the computer and the HRM.  I already had an ANT+ HRM, so I didn't need that.

ETA:  I know the garmin has 3 bike settings.  So you can actually have a setting for your bike that configures to your PT.  And if you rent a race wheel PT, you can just use bike 2 settings and sync with that PT.  That way you still have your original PT setting saved.  I think the Cycleops computer has multiple bike settings, so you should be able to do that as well.

And I am assuming you are talking about the wireless PTs.  You can't do this with the wired PTs

1) yes you should be able to use the rented pt with your headset but2) just get a pt on your training wheels and buy a wheel cover for $80, then you get both

Bolded the important part, get a PT laced to a Mavic Open pro or similar wheel and pick up a wheelcover from wheelbuilder.com and viola you now have a disc wheel.  You don't get the whump, whump sound but it's very nearly just as fast as a regular disc wheel.

Are there any issues to getting a wheel cover with a wired PT?

none! I used one with my PT pro for a few years with no issues.

Can you use a wired PT with a garmin 705?

I'm leaning toward getting a quarq powermeter. That way it'll read power no matter what wheels I have on the bike.

Nope, that's really the only reason I would like to switch to wireless one day, the freedom to pick 705, 500, Joule, etc, able to obsess over numbers more while riding instead of waiting until I get home : )

Wired units use LYC (little yellow computers) only as they are not ant+.

I had two wired PT units..one in training wheel and one in Zipp 404s. My training hub had issues so I upgraded last year to wireless as Sarris couldn't fix it.

I just bought a new bike and got a Quarq pm. I'm playing around with using both PT and Quarq to see how the power numbers compare. I'm having issues with my 310xt picking up multiple power meters though.

Wired unit I would have to replace the wiring harness most years for about $65/year as wire tends to break.

thanks,

thats what I figured. I was searching ebay for a PT wheel for another bike and saw the wired ones. I didn't think they'd work with my garmin, but figured I'd ask. Looks like I have to stick with ANT+. I still think I'll buy a quarq pm before I get race wheels. I'm looking to improve the engine first! Then I'll spend the money on race wheels. Besides, I can always rent them if it's that important to me.
