wow, finally is right.  I can't fit this race in but wanted to use it to get some cycling friends into tris.  That doesn't work out so well when they would only have two months to get into swimming and running.

I've been thinking about doing this one this year...probably won't decide just yet...possibly have something else going on that day and this isn't a race I want to reschedule my life around.

I was going to do the Naples Island Swim that weekend, but am now considering this. Does anyone know how hilly the bike course is?

The bike is very flat. There is one short climb from the street up to the top of the dam.
The run is mostly flat, although there is a bit of a rise coming back to the finish. The entire race is in and around a large flood control basin, no real hills to speak of... but you know how it is when you are suffering in race mode, you tend to notice every little ant hill!

Dang! I realized later that we're going camping later that day! I'm usually too pooped after a race to deal with all the camping stuff. Maybe I'll be doing the Naples swim after all. It's not as phyisically demanding.

I've been lazy to get moving this year...I just signed up for this one again since I had so much fun last year. Did the price go up by $20 or is it me registering for this so late? Anyway...this is my first of three tris planned for the year.  If I feel up to it, pumped enough, or rich enough, maybe I'll throw in another in October or November.

Listening to the Simon Gowen radio show that they have posted, a discount code was given out for online registering at Active.com.  The code "SGHDT6" will get you $10 off registration.

I work for the title sponsor and we got nothing for a discount this year.

Glara - I did see some youths racing last year. It's a pretty compact course and I would think that it would be good for younger racers.  The rules are pretty clear about the 12 yo age limitation.

I'll see you folks there!  Look for the 35-39 AG guy with lots of tattoos and no hair.  :D

Anybody else wearing their westuit?   I think I'll use mine just as a practice run for my OLY next month.

Competition!

I was debating using my wetsuit and I think I have decided not to. If I don't wear a wetsuit, my transition will almost be nonexistent....and I don't think it will really help me much at just a 500 yard swim as I'm pretty good in the water. I'll bring it though and decide when I get there.

See you there!

Yeah...I can handle the swim with no westuit with no problem, but I think I'd really like to see how I can do with it in a race atmosphere since the OLY swim in Santa Cruz will be a bit more chaotic than this one.

Guess I'll do the same...bring it and decide on the spot.

If you're using this as a tune up for your OLY I would say wear the wetsuit since it will be good transition practice which you wont be able to get anywhere else.

I went without last year, but I think I'll wear it this year. Time wise, it'll likely be a wash... it'll save a few seconds on the swim and cost a few in T1. However, it'll be a good run-through for another upcoming race.

You guys will have a 24 minute head start on me, I'll be in the old fart wave.

Twist my arm why don't ya!

Yeah...I'm still in the lust phase my my new wetsuit anyways.....I'd feel real bad about leaving her at home.

For those that have done it...how's the parking situation?  Is there enough for everybody, or does it turn into every man for himself after a certain point?

(Just curious for my family, who will probably be getting there closer to the start.)

Last year, I got there fairly early and parking was a breeze. Pretty close too. For those arriving later last year, things got exponentially bad. Lines for everything were very long. I didn't pick-up my race packet the day before and must have waited in 4 different long lines to take care of everything (packet, chip, cap, transition check-in, etc)... the worst line was just to get into the transition area, so it would not have mattered whether you picked up your packet on Saturday or not.

Get there early and you'll have a relatively relaxing time getting set-up, warmed-up, etc.

I had almost forgotten about that line to get into transition..

This was my first tri last year and I didn't have a wetsuit. I have a wetsuit this year and plan to NOT use it. Such a short swim and I think it'll just make matters worse for me in T1.

The water was 78 degrees last year or something crazy warm too, but the summer warmth has been a bit more cool this year, so yeah... maybe I'll bring the wetsuit and decide on the fly as well.

Yeah, last year I got there before 5:30, got a good parking spot and was toward the beginning of the bike check line. I did pick up my packet the day before and I'm doing the same this year.  As for the super warm water last year...it felt like a bathtub...I was thinking of not wearing a wetsuit again but I think I might bring it just in case.  I think it felt so warm because it was overcast and chilly in the morning and the water was a warm relief in comparison.

Just got home from packet pickup....man it's a little bit of a haul from Long Beach.   The location seems....interesting.   The park itself is pretty nice, but the areas between the 5 and there are pretty nasty looking.
No biggie...still looking forward to it.

Wow...what a great race!  I had a blast and did pretty well for my second race.    Had a time of 1:08:37 and 16th in my AG (not sure how many started).  Hope you guys had good races.
