If I am wiggy its out of sheer appreciation of the geekery and science of it all... and the sheer sneakiness of trying to use something like a water bottle to accomplish it! (ST's... interesting. I did like today's tattoo thread. They are kind of like Fark on speed)

(HIJACK) That thread is hilarious. (/HIJACK)

Now back to fairings and illegal bike geometry.

abrezo - 2010-07-01 7:35 PM Was recently in a Trek store in columbus.  According to them, the Speed Concept bike as it is sold IS NOT race legal in sanctioned events!!!  The tri case must be removed and the areo bars on the one in the store also needed to be removed as they were also illegal.

Rationale when asked, .... they made the bike tooo fast!

By the way, are you talking about the Speed Concept 9 series?  I was looking at a Speed Concept 7 and didn't know what you were referring to until Bryan mentioned a "trunk."  The 9 series is the only one that seems to have something like that from what I have seen.

Yes it was, beautiful bike.  My conversation with the rep just boggled my mind.  The aero bars themselves didnt look much different from the ones used on the specialized s-wok=rks used by saxo bank, but they weren't the ones used y Lieto at kona, nor the ones on lances bike.  And notice, no trunk on Lieto's bike ... reason because it reduces drag as previously stated.

Didn't mean to sound like an expert or know it all, but it jst puzzled me.  $6000- $8000 bike and two of the upgraded features can't be used?

I am with you man.  Like I mentioned earlier, once I'm on a bike, there will be nothing aero about the situation anyway so it would be a waste of money for me.  I am considering a SC7 or a Felt B16 for next year though.  Those are much less expensive than the SC9.  I read somewhere that Trek was also making a Speed Concept 2 series which would be < $2k?  I don't see them anywhere though.  (I know.. different topic

bryancd - 2010-07-01 6:37 PM No, it's aero bars and "trunk" box are not UCI legal, that's all.

It also has something to do with the stem. I will go out and look for the pictures but there was a modification that needed to be made. If I remember it correctly they had to do it 2 weeks before Tour of California but that was just for UCI.

There are photos on velonews of the before and after.

I'm assuming ITT is indiv. and TTT is team.  If that's the case, I'm still wondering why it matters?  Are they trying to protect previous records?

It's because the UCI has quite a lot of stuffy old fools at the top

so wait...these tt bikes are actually bought by road racers meaning non-pros to do TT's?

i just don't see how this market can be bigger then triathletes buying the bike for triathlons.

i think in the past 2 years since i started i have only seen 1 actual time trialist practicing for a tt...and boy he was fast....but rest were all triathletes....BTW i have a friend who is an owner of 2 bike shops in hawaii, his hottest item...TT bike....due to triathlon hotness...

BACK to the thread...speed concept not UCI legal....Surprised with the aerobar setup and rear box...what a surprise...welcome to the club, p4 and giant trinity...

Lots of club level racers do TTs.  Also, there are lots of Amateur stage races that include a TT.  For what its worth  I see a much higher blingage per person ratio at any of the TTs I show up to than any multi-sport event I've ever been to.  Multisport may be a bigger market, but the hardcore bike racing crowd spends a TON of money on their gear.

The guyat Trek also said the TTX prand will be discontinued and they will be transfering over to the Speed Concept model that will allw for design modification on website, and will include cheaper $ models.

He also said my aluminum equinox was fine just needed wheep and component modifications, not necessarily a carbon frame.

You're probably right, but I know tons of people who own sick TT bikes who have never attempted or want to attempt a tri.

Actually, I know more people with TT bikes that don't do tris, than I know triathletes that do have TT bikes.  But that's probably because I just know more road racers...and the triathletes I know use road bikes with aero bars.

my guess...and this is just a total guess...is that they want to keep TT bikes looking like bikes.  Without regulation, I suppose bike manufacturers would come up with some crazy designs that don't even resemble what the current bikes look like.

Maybe like how NASCAR has cars that sort of look like cars...but Indy cars don't look anything like what normal people drive on the road.

Again...just a guess...I really have no clue...and thanks for asking.

You mean something like this? ... flairing mainly for flairing's sake ...

A lot of cycling events have mixed disciplines over multiple days (individual TT, crit, stages...).  They ride at a level and speed much higher than most triathletes.  If you want to stay competitive you need multiple bikes.  The last TT I saw near me was 12 miles, with the cat 4-5 guys holding around 27+ mph.

Triathlon is growing a lot though.  When I mentioned the Lotus / Zipp bikes getting discontinued, that was in the early 90s, and triathlon was a seriously niche market.

The cycling crowd also probably does most of their training on regular road bikes, where the tri crowd is more likely to be seen out and about using aerobars on a day to day basis.

x2 on your average club racer being at an insane level.  I've done two TTs and one stage race, each was a humbling experience.  Especially the stage race.

I did a road race once and got my back side handed to me, riding in the CAT 5 group.

i realize that the powers that be don't care about my opinion, but aside from motors/extravegant pulley systems or what not, i would like to encourage the manufacturers to spend the money on crazy concept designs.  I usually do a trip around the transition area to window shop as it is and think that it shouldn't be illegal if it was available for everyone.  i mean, if i can't come up with $9k for a bike b/c i'm poor blue collar type, then isn't the rich guy "cheating"?  i don't know, i would like to give the engineers the oportunity to do what they went to school for, engineer.  i think we are nearing a plateau in current aero technology.
