I am relatively new to riding, been training and have put around 200 miles on the tires and tubes that came with my bike. I have a few sprint tris over the next month or so, and by then will probably have put another 150-200 miles on the wheels. I am getting feaful that I am going to get flatted in my first tri. How long do you normally go before flatting a tube?

Every time I talk about how long it's been since I flatted... I get a flat.

I will say it is quite a bit more miles than you are talking here. Your talking about around a months worth of miles.

I go months between flats, but I ride under 100 mi/wk most weeks.

Practice changing your tires until you get good at it.  It's a hassle, but it's worth the time.  Just bring in your front tire and floor pump some day and go at it while you're watching TV.  The only added complexity on the rear tire is the chain routing, which you should also practice, but is easier to get.

Oh, and remember to close your brake calipers after you put the wheel back on.  I always forget that!

I don't think it's really a question of miles--it's not like it's a wear issue or anything like that.  It's mainly a matter of how often you run over something that punctures the tube.  You might go for 1000 miles without a puncture, and then get three on the same ride.

So bottom line is be ready for a puncture on any ride, race or not.

Agree with above. When I was living in Phoenix I would flat nearly weekly because of the goathead thorns... Now that I live in Seattle, I've only flatted once (fingers crossed) because of glass... Just depends.

I have been riding continental gatorskins for the last 2 years. Never flatted on them. I change them every year. I swear they are bomb proof. Prior to that I was flatting quite a bit.

I went a few years before getting my first flat, and then it was a few within a few weeks.

I got tired of getting flats so I switched to gatorskins. Haven't had a flat since. Knock on wood. I probably loose a little performance wise but I am just in this for fun and that just makes me train harder also.

Had my first flat the other day and have less than 100m on my bike.  In terms of when to expect your to have a flat, I think it has a lot to do with the conditions where you are riding.  The bike path I use has a fair amount of very small broken twigs and other debris from trees.  I don't know what caused the puncture but I think I must have hit the sharp end of a broken twig.  Who knows.  If you ride in area that is relatively debris free, you might go quite a while without a flat.

Almost never, I use Bontragger hard case tires.  They are heavy, but at my fitness and competitive level the weight savings of a race tire are trumped by reliability.

A lot depends on your tires and the road conditions. My buddy had two rear tire flats this morning during a 50 mile ride.

and I ride on some very bad roads. Any flat I get is from driver error like not slowing down for a big hole or missing a bunny hop. Every flat was a snakebite from a impact, not a puncture.

I have about 700 or so miles on my bike.  I have only had one flat so far.  Of course it was during a sprint tri on the REAR tire and the bike was 2 weeks old at the time.

Mostly it's the road conditions but also you have to watch your tire pressure etc.

Chance favors the prepared.....

I've only had one flat while riding in the last two years (4500 miles). For some reason my tires have flatted three times while sitting at home - one scared the cr@p out of my cat! It alldepends on bow you put the tire on and where you ride. Unless you ride in an area with lots of thorns I wouldn't worry about flatting i your race. That said, don't forget your flat kit!

I think they slow me down just a tad, but not getting a flat is so worth it.

I have actually never flatted, and biked about 5000 miles so far over the last 5 years.  Now I'll flat on my next ride for sure!

I'm a bit scared to post on this thread...

I think it's been nearly 2 years since I flatted.  I ride on Conti GP4000.

I'm sure I'll flat tomorrow.

I've just been thinking about this the past week, since my tires are showing some serious signs of wear and I want to replace them. I really don't want to mess with something that works though. Four years and 5252 km without a flat, on the same tubes in the same tires. They're Michelin Pro Race 2, which I thought weren't supposed to last very long at all. I haven't babied them either, they've seen all kinds of rough pavement and gravel roads and trails.

I too fully expect to get a flat this week now.

That's a lot of mileage on your tires.

I do about 3-4,000 miles when I change them which ends up I get new tires each spring. Best way to know is to feel the tire and if you can feel flat spot all around the tire, replace them.
