I'm a little tired of hearing of the Lifetime Tri (no offense) -- who is in for the best Minnesota July race, HOTL? I'll be doing my 2nd one this year and love this event. This is my 'A' race for the year and hope to see many of you there.

I am sorry to be missing this one this year, even though I complain about doing it   It's the same day as another race I decided to do.   Sad.  Have a great race!

I'm so sad that I'm not doing HOLT this year.  Sadly, I'll be at Racine that weekend.  HOLT is my fav race; always a bike PR there.  Have fun!

Kelly and I are both signed up to do it again.  Yhis is my favorite race by far and would not miss it.  Bunch of us always stick around to do some grilling after the tri.

Grilling and beer drinking!  I'll be there also and hope that any BTers who'll be racing will join us after.

Because of my chicken sandwich induced injuries in May this will be my first race of the year.

Not "A" material yet, but really looking forward to getting out there.

I'll be there doing the short course alongside my newbie sister. This will actually be my first tri of the year! Love this race!

For folks who have done this before.....

Assuming the water is not frigid (I have no idea what the temp is), given that the swim is relatively short do most folks skip the wetsuit, or do you feel that even for 1/2 mile the benefits of the suit are worth the time to take it off?

For a half mile swim the benefits of wearing a wetsuit outweigh not wearing one.  HOLT will draw a pretty siginificant elite crowd and if wetsuits are allowed I would guess everyone will wear one.  Those are the better swimmers, benefits become more obvious for worse swimmers.  I see well over half the crowd wearing a wetsuit at 1/4 mile swims.  Just need to practice enough with it to be able to quickly remove suit in transition.

Water at HOLT is never cold... (even when the air is. What was it last year, like 42 degrees when transition opened?)

I'd say it's been wetsuit legal half to three quarters of all the times I've done it--and when it's legal most people still wear them.

This is the race I love to hate, and I'm sorry to miss it this year! :-) Have fun!

yeah, the Elite wave is not allowed to wear wetsuits if the water is above 72, and IIRC they are optional AG'ers....for the extra 5 seconds it takes me to get it off, I will DEFINATELY be wearing one until I no longer see an additional 5 seconds of benefit!

I'm guessing that a lot of races will be sans wet suit this summer...  It's been MUCH warmer, and even the races last year were always on the edge.

The water most certainly WAS frigid last year!  The water temp was 68 and I stuck out like a sore thumb as I seemed to be the only one without a wet suit!  (It was my first tri).   And you are on the money when you say that it was about 42last year.    (from my text(s) to nate
"Car says its 45 deg."
"it's 45 friggen deg"
"my bad,  its actually 43 deg."
"I just passed a plane"   (seriously,  some guy was towing a fully assembled ultralight down the road on a trailer at 5 AM.

I vote wetsuit.

Heart of the Lakes is not USAT sanctioned as far as I'm aware, so the race directors can set the wetsuit temp cutoff wherever they feel like.  If I had to bet on it, I'd guess they're going to say no wetsuits in the elite wave but allow them in the AG waves, just like they did in '08.

I'm in for my one and only race this year.  I'll be doing the short course with my brother.  It'll be his first tri ever.  Considering how my training has been virtually non-existant this year (sad), I don't expect to be setting any speed records.  That said, I'll be a little upset if I don't beat my little brother.

I do know you have to have either a USAT membeership or buy the one day membership to compete in this, so would assume it is sanctioned, but don't know if that is one and the same.   Wet suit rules according to the web site are no wetsuite for elites if water temp is over 72 degrees.  Optional for others.

FWIW, HOLT is NOT a USAT sanctioned event, so you do not need the license

Hi,

I  haven't done this one before, so this morning I went out to look at / ride the course.

Water temp was 84 deg F one foot below the surface. Rather balmy.

Lots of weeds and it didn't smell particularly good. That dead fish smell was rather pervasive. I'm sure both disappear as you get away form shore.

On the bike course the section of Hwy 2 in between CR-136 and Co Rd 44 had a lot of small rocks from the shoulder. This is the section where the shoulder is gravel.

Also the corner from Hwy 2 to Co Rd 44 had lots of small rocks and sand. Definitely don't lean hard going into this one.

The stretch on Hwy 55 had a fair bit of debris on the shoulder, but other than those the bike roads were great.

Somehow there way always a headwind - I must have ridden it backwards by mistake. Sealed

Hope this is helpful and good luck to all those showing up!
