Thanks for the well wishes.  It's not that serious of an injury.  I learned a valuable lesson from it all.  Surfing in rough conditions near barnacle encrusted submerged pilings can sometimes be dangerous.  I've surfed that spot for years and never had a problem but had always heard of others getting caught inside and hitting the pilings.  A few stiches later and a few years the wiser...

PS- I'm back on the bike in 10 days!!!

I asked the good folks at SetUp Events why the change.  I was told it was for safety reasons.  A concern about the path of the sunrise and about having local boats in the broader channel.

Can't make the test drive tomorrow, wife has other plans.  Sorry for the delay, I was trying to work it in.

Rode the course today with Team in Training group and the early stages to mile 9 definitely have some climbs, even getting out of the park.  There are some nice fast sections as well later on.  Road had both smooth and rough sections of course.  Two lane roads most of the way but not sure how they will manage traffic.  Today, at 0700 it was a bit of a concern at times.  Best luck to all racers next week.

I drove the course on Saturday evening and in addition to what kweezen already said there are two climbs coming back up to the transition area on Cornelius Rd.  The first one has a decent grade and is followed shortly by the second one which is a long gradual climb.  After the second climb you get a little reprieve headed into transition but just keep in mind to leave something in the tank for the end.  That hill combo could make for some heavy running legs! That bike to run transition sounds challenging.  Appreciate the feedback.  Since I am doing this as a relay (I'm swimming), I have reminded my younger brother who is doing the run that he should be friendly and supportive to everyone he passes along the course and under no circumstances should he torch anyone in the last couple hundred yards.

I'm a pink swim cap.  Guess I won't be using that souvenir at my local pool.  Sigh.

Yep, a pink cap on a dude gets attention!  I took this Friday (tomorrow) off for my "pre-race" routine and plan on being there at 6 for the orientation.

The weather looks gorgeous.  71 at race time.  Doesn't look like it will break 80 before the race ends.  I was afraid it would be 90 by run time.

Any chance this is wetsuit legal?  I wasn't planning on packing mine.

Here's the answer to my water temp question.  Check out this link.  Says it is recorded in the Stumpy Creek section.  86.9

Lake Norman is pretty much at bath water status by mid summer and stays that way until September.  Luckily my practice swim last weekend didn't seem to bad.  Then again I was going really slow.

I did a practice swim at the Lake Norman YMCA two weeks ago and did three loops of 750 yards.  Water was definitely warm and no break neck pace, but I was very comfortable when I finished.  I expect Saturday's water temp to be as warm or even a little cooler.

Funny story... I got an email from SetUp yesterday something like "hope your looking forward to Stumpy Creek on Saturday!".  My reaction was "huh?"

I registered for this Jan. 6 and had completely forgotten about it.  So I guess I'm racing...  Haven't really been training, so it should be fun.

Good thing they send out the emails.

Good luck to everyone racing this weekend.  I'm bummed I have to sit this one out but on a high note, the stitches come out today.  I actually thought about trying to race anyway, but my wife is ever the voice of reason and talked me out of it.

We'll miss you out there Wojo.  The weather is looking good....71 at the start, 76 near the end (will feel a bit warmer with the humidity), overcast, and a light breeze.  Unfortunately none of this helps flatten those hills.  Good luck to everyone.

Good job Bill and Stephen....Bill 2nd place in AG...way to go.

That was a really tough course and the last hill on the run loop was brutal but we couldn't have asked for better weather.

Thanks Wubbs!  Really enjoyed the swim and bike.  Wish I could say the same for the run.  Setup Events did another nice job.

Thanks.  I really need to keep working on my swimming.  I lost so much time out there it's not even funny.  The bike and run were where I thought they would be though so I'm happy about that.  That last hill on the run loop was a killer.  The only good thing about it was that it made the run to the finish line feel really easy.  Congrats everybody!

Agreed on the hill.  The first time up it I immediately thought about having to do it again, but it did make the finish feel easier.

Enjoyed the opportunity to cheer you guys on after finishing my relay swim in a pitifully slow time.  This was the first tri I actually got to watch and it was a lot of fun.  I met the second place finisher for open women at the HI Express the night before.  Everything about her said FAST.  The women's winner was the first competitor out of the water.  Wow!  A great event.

My relay family had a ball.  My brothers far exceeded expectations on the bike and run.  We almost missed my brother coming in on the bike at 1:22.  He thought he had no chance of making 1:30.  Still trying to figure out how he cut the bike course short.  My brother on the run had no warmup and had to sprint to transition to make the chip exchange.  Hysterical.

Looking forward to next year already.
