Comments:

Overall, considering that I thought that I broke my collarbone last weekend when I wrecked my bike, I was fairly happy. Still faster than LY, even though my shoulder was barking at me pretty good by the end of the swim
What would you do differently?:

Not wreck the bike the week before the race. I am pretty sure that I could knock this swim out in about 32 minutes if my shoulder was cooperating
Transition 1

Comments:

had to stop to use the bathroom. I don't know why but I just couldn't force myself to pee in the water during the swim. Took way too much time.....
What would you do differently?:

make sure to use the restroom before the start of the event
Bike

Comments:

Old Stagecoach continues to abuse me. I was within 2-300 yards of the top, made a gear change (which wouldn't engage) and lost all momentum and fell over. I had to walk it far enough to find a spot where I could actually re-mount the bike with some kind of speed and kept going. Overall, I was okay with the ride portion, as I chopped more than 13 minutes off of LY time
What would you do differently?:

Gearing on the bike has got to be working for all of the lower gears, something I will make sure of for next time
Transition 2

Run
  • 1h 06m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 43s  min/mile
Comments:

I lowered my pace from 12:33/mile to 10:44/mile this year. I actually felt like I was racing instead of surviving. I probably could have pushed it harder, but my legs were very tight the first 2 miles, so I saved it for the back half of the run. I felt stronger the longer I went
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Bad shoulder and bad transitions. I wrecked the bike last weekend and didn't have time to make sure that all adjustments were done right, so gearing was off and I paid for it on Old Stagecoach. Overall I was pretty happy though, because I knocked off 28 minutes from my total time from last year, so I am seeing improvement, but I wish I hadn't given up so much time on the swim, T1, and on the hill, otherwise I would have probably knocked an additional 10-15 minutes off of the total time

Great job out there, especially following the accident.  The gearing on the bike is unfortunate, I was once told by people that climb much better than me (and with a similar 'stay seated' approach) to "change gears early and often and keep that cadence above 90rpm for as long as you can".  If it hits 90rpm, downshift until you're back at 100rpm, because at some point you're going to run out of gears on a climb like that and you'd better have saved your strength to crank on the pedals of when that happens.  That's also a tremendous amount of time to knock off the run!  That's awesome.

Great job out there.

Yeah, the main problem though was that when I shifted to that last gear, the derailleur wouldn't catch the lowest gear correctly, otherwise I am pretty sure that I make it up the last part of the hill (looking back I should have just left it in the gear I had it in and gutted it out).
