Butler Family YMCA

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 17m 38s
Overall Rank = 179/230
Age Group = 40-44
Age Group Rank = 19/25
Pre-race routine:

Usually drink a cup of coffee and have an english muffin with peanutbutter and honey.
Event warmup:

It was my first OWS so I made sure to find the time to get in and swim about 100 yards.
Swim
  • 13m 8s
  • 437 yards
  • 02m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

This was my first OWS in a tri, so I stayed to the back. I did manage to pass a couple of people. I was surprised at how close I had to be to actually see people underwater! About midway, I lifted my head to sight and a lifeguard asked me if I was ok. Apparently I had gone about 20 yards off-course! Given enough time, I might have made a big circle! Got back on track and made it out of the water almost last in my age group. Ok for someone who couldn't swim 5 yards a year ago, but definitely something to work on.
What would you do differently?:

Work on speed at the pool, until now, it has been all about doing the distance so I didn't drown! I would also sight better lost about a minute going off/getting back on track.
Transition 1
  • 02m 19s
Comments:

Was 63rd out of 230 in the first transition...closest to the top I'll ever see!
Bike
  • 31m 12s
  • 7 miles
  • 13.46 mile/hr
Comments:

Too much vacation and not enough ride since last race made it particularly difficult. Hardest 7 miles ever!
What would you do differently?:

More rides and hill work.
Transition 2
  • 01m 41s
Comments:

Legs were a bit spent. Should have run faster.
Run
  • 29m 16s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 25s  min/mile
Comments:

Too slow, again too much vacation not enough running, but I'm slow on a good day!
What would you do differently?:

Nothing, did the best I could.
Post race
Warm down:

Snacks and water and a mocha frappe at Mcdonalds!

Event comments:

Have only done one other and watched another. At both races, there were more people in the water (jet skis, etc.) Snacks were kind of limited: 2 apple slices, 2 orange slices, dixie cups of chex mix and some cheap cookies. They were handed to us so no seconds! Limited water as well. One bottle handed to each racer. No music either. Don't have a lot to compare it on, but the other races were way more fun!

I was lucky to go check out the hills earlier in the week.  The one that caught me most by surprise was on the way back right where the road split.

I just went back to the finish line and grabbed another water out of the drum.  The snacks were unguarded when I got to them - I only took one though!

I appreciated the "tech" shirt, although me and white????  Not good.  And the rest of the bag was useless, except for the Subway cookie coupon.  Still overall I thought it was OK.  The run turnaround came about 2 minutes earlier than I was expecting - that was good news!
