Pre-race routine:

We had traveled the day before, stayed in a motel a few miles from the race location. Race day morning I was up and out early, didn't really sleep well, and rode my bike to the transition area. Set things up, talked with a few people I knew.
Event warmup:

None. This was 2nd year for me at this race, same course.
Swim
  • 13m 30s
  • 1093 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

There were 3 waves released in 3 min increments, I was in wave #2. This was the first time I was in anything but the first wave. Not sure how they determined who was to be in what wave, as each wave seemed to have a blending of male/female/old/young. I lined up directly behind two women who I knew were going to be smokin fast (they ended up with 1st and 3rd fastest swims) and I was going to try to draft off them as long as I could. When we started I lost them within the first 50 yards, need to work on drafting and sighting. I pulled away from the rest of my wave before hitting the first buoy. Seemed to drift a tad left. Started passing wave#1 people just prior to first buoy then alot more in between buoy#1 and buoy#2. After rounding buoy#2, it was a straight shot back to the beach, clear sailing the whole way. I was 2 minutes faster this year, and this year the lake temp was too high so NO WETSUITS.
What would you do differently?:

After the initial fast start I settled into a groove. I made a couple attempts to pick up my pace (in between buoy1+2 and then again on the homestretch) but it seemed very difficult to break out of the groove pace I was in. Not sure why?
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

No chip timing, No idea where T1 time was stored. Felt alot faster than last year. Also didn't have to remove a wetsuit.
Bike
  • 39m 34s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.20 mile/hr
Comments:

tired legs. didn't have the power to push hard. frustrated slightly but pushed to my limit at the time
What would you do differently?:

I am a better biker than this performance. I can do better.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

T2 time not separated, but I blistered this one. Came screaming in, unclipped one foot, swung smoothly off, unclipped other and began running. Racked quickly first try, helmet off, shoe switch, off and running
Run
  • 28m 51s
  • 3.1 miles
  • 09m 19s  min/mile
Comments:

man I suffer the run. can't seem to get heart rate down, breathing way too hard, legs feel like I have a 4 year old hanging onto each one.
What would you do differently?:

Need to improve run fitness
