Boise Valley YMCA

Sunny
Total Time = 2h 40m 19s
Overall Rank = 71/204
Age Group = 44-49
Age Group Rank = 8/24
Pre-race routine:

Went to bed too late, got up to watch a wonderful lightening storm at 0230. Wanted to eat 3 hours prior, but son didn't buy milk like i asked him too. Oh well, I guess I'll have toast and oatmeal instead. Got stuff ready and met Tom (mtnbkr) at T1.
Event warmup:

Not much-kinda chilly at the start. Did a wee bit of jogging and a good deal of quiet stretching/visualization stuff.
Swim
  • 33m 44s
  • 1640 yards
  • 02m 04s / 100 yards
Comments:

18 of 24 AG. I'm pretty disappointed in my swim. I just couldn't get going at all. I seemed like i had a 'rythym' only to get hit with a wave and start getting anxious. Right goggle lens kept leaking, forcing me to turn left to breath. Felt strong-it just seemed to take forever to finish. Most people are saying the course was long. It was a better swim than last year, but I was hoping for more.
What would you do differently?:

Just more races under my belt-all the training in the world doesn't prepare you for the start of a race.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

I was FASTEST in my AG at T1. I tried the rubber band/shoe idea and it worked pretty well. Except my foot sliped off the shoe and came crashing down on the crankarm-ouch. That bruise would come back to haunt me. Also, I got the feeling my goggles fell out of my sleeve while I was running. When I turned to look for them a friend hollered from the crowd and distracted me. I lost my goggles (so far have not recovered)
What would you do differently?:

More practice with the shoes on pedals trick. Don't lose any more goggles/caps
Bike
  • 1h 13m 35s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.26 mile/hr
Comments:

crazy Idaho wind, always swilrling, however, felt mostly like it was a tail/cross tail.
Rode with ear plugs in so the wind wouldn't effect me on the downhills-I loved it. Really able to focus on my pace and breathing. Bike leg was ridden very controlled-don't have the fitness to go hard yet. I think this was my smartest leg of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Carried too much speed into a couple turns. Front wheel stepped out on me near Columbia Village. Need more time on the QR-back started getting a little tight around mile 20.
Transition 2
  • 00m 32s
Comments:

Went a bit too fast with the socks and had to dab a foot down-took deep breath and re-grouped. After that sock went on great. Running with race belt through the mat saved me some seconds.

Smooth is fast.
What would you do differently?:

new shoes should help me go sockless.
Run
  • 49m 30s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Timing Chip data was incorrect (i WISH I could run a 17 min. 10K). Time is approximated via all timed segments. Run felt good. Had a little mishap with a ShotBlok (See Forums "Anyone ever ate an earplug"). Felt pretty controlled, didn't want to push too early and blow up, but I think I timed it well. Need a little more fitness to run the way I would like. However, on the bright side-NO INJURIES this year.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing-A bit more race fitness, but that's coming along as scheduled. Wear new shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

SUCKED! Water was all warm, no liquids but water available, I have a hard time with pizza/bagels immediatly after a run. Last year they had a post-race beverage called 'Honey Milk" and it was wonderful.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just a lack of fitness, but that was expected. My "A" races aren't til later and I can't keep an edge that long.

Event comments:

FAMILY THERE AT FINISH! First time ever that my kids have seen me race. Man was I ever proud to have had a good race while they were watching. My GF joked several weeks ago, "You're not going to embarrass me are you". As soon as I finished she almost jumped in my arms and said 'i am SO proud of you". 16 years of marriage and the ex never once showed up. I'm in a good place right now. I love triathlons.
